So, outa curiosity, if i wanted to upgrade my 4790k CPU withOUT having to upgrade my z97 mobo and DDR3 RAM, is there something i could upgrade to? OR has this aging build peeked and the only way to upgrade is to gut it and replace the big 3?  im sorta holding my breath on DDR5 RAM to upgrade.... but we'll see about that :/

may be you could get a 5775c for better graphics so you can pull out the graphics card for a new build

That's.... a really uncommon, and extremely niche CPU that'll be slower than the OP's current CPU, doesn't make much sense at all.

OP, if you aren't pushing a good OC, I'd try that. Only real way to pull more performance out of your CPU without needing a new one.

EDIT: Best you can do while keeping DDR3 would be X79. The 6c/12t i7s on that platform are still solid performers once overclocked, and it supports quad channel DDR3 so you can get some solid bandwidth.

actually im rocking a solid OC of .7ghz for a solid 4.7, had it that way for about 9 months, been super stable (knock on wood) to my surprise. I was just curious to see if theres anyway i could squeeze afew more drops of juice outa it buuuuuut, doesnt look like thats possible or even if it was, remotely worth it.
