Laptop essentially broke after windows 10 update

So about a week ago my laptop suddenly started lagging severely to the point it was not usable past the desktop. Some symptoms include but are definitely not limited to: Lagging and freezing from simply moving the mouse, internet browsers would just time out if you tried to access any websites. The internet would cut out and the computer would say there are no available networks even though I live in a small apartment with several nearby. Virus scans turned up nothing (windows defender and malware bytes), task manager did not show any high usage of anything, windows explorer would frequently crash, windows troubleshooter would stall eternally, windows update just gave errors etc.OH IMPORTANT note I just remembered, I did a /scannow in admin cmd and was told that there were corrupt files but that windows could not fix them. This scan came up fine after the reset. After thinking about what might have been the cause, I realized the only thing that changed from when it was working till it stopped working was the update. After realizing this I tried to factory reset hoping that would fix it. Unfortunately rather than help, it only made things worse and went from somewhat usable on the desktop (still lagged and froze constantly as I moved the mouse) to... well... just a worse version, and with no programs to attempt a troubleshoot. Some quick specs and programs that were on the computer(acer aspire 5 google it for specs)(programs: malware bytes, chrome, firefox, notepad++, paint.net, adobe flash, discord, steam, adobe reader, and vlc) yes that list is nai complete. At this point I thought it was essentially toast and put it off to the side, checking on it every little bit. A few days later I turn it on to show some people in my family what is wrong, and it suddenly started working, even though just the day before when I had checked it, it was still messed up. At this point the computer was pinging notifications about drivers being installed left and right and internet explorer allowed me to search and download things again, so I downloaded some basic software to check for viruses and hardware issues but came up with nothing. Just some background info before this next part, the desktop style before and after the reset were different. I still have the windows.old folder on my computer and when i clicked on it my computer flickered black and changed to the old desktop style which scared the shit out of me so I turned off the computer and when I turned it back on it was normal again. I have not tempted fate since then, and am curious why that would happen. Also would greatly appreciate it if anyone knows why this stuff happened and possibly how to prevent any sequela or from this reoccurring. Lastly I just called acer and told them what happened (minus the fact its working again) and they said it was probably a hardware issue and I would have to send it in for repairs. I don't want to do that if I don't have to though, as I need the laptop for school and this will take at least a few weeks. So once again if anyone knows what happened and if I should worry about any issues cropping up in the future it would be much appreciated!

Haha I tried to keep it short so I cut out details even though it ended up long anyway. I did use the media creation tool when I factory reset, don't understand the rest of what you said though
