Hey guys,

Just finished installing Windows on my new build (I'm typing from my new pc now, super excited!). Here's the deal - I've been out of the loop for quite awhile - my last full build was roughly 10 years ago, and over the years I sort of stopped running CPU tests or monitoring temps. Now that I have a spiffy new build, I'd like to get back into monitoring (and overclocking). My question for the community today is: what does everyone use for CPU/CPU/Hardware monitoring and test-benching, such as temps and speeds?

I used to run CPUz and 3Dmark, Prime95 as well.

Newly finished build for 2019:

  • Core i9 9900KF
  • EVGA RTX 2080 Black
  • Gigabyte Aorus Pro Wifi
  • G.Skill Trident Z 32GB (2x16) 3200mhz 16cl DDR4 memory
  • ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB Gen3x4 PCIe M.2
  • Corsair RM850x PSU
  • NZXT Kraken x72 360mm AIO
  • Corsair LL120 radiator fans
  • Thermaltake Core P3 Case
  • Spiffy TT Rainbow sleeved cable extensions

MSI Afterburner with Riva Tuner allows you to monitor CPU/GPU usage and temps while in game. If you have a second monitor you can use HWInfo or HWMonitor (Info is better) on it while in game.

For GPU overclocking I several applications depending on the workload. For overclocking I use MSI Afterburner until I'm happy with my OC, and then use a vBIOS editor to make them permanent. For stress testing, if you want a single application Aida64 is your best bet, but it's best to use more. Unigine Heaven is old but does a good job at stressing the GPU core, Unigine Superposition is the same (but stress test costs money). It's also good at testing memory performance. OCCT is great for a very intense stress test on both the GPU core and memory (make sure error checking is enabled). This is a very intense test so monitor your temps closely until they level out.

For CPU overclocking it's a bit more simple. Overclock in the BIOS and stress test with Prime95 or Blender (I prefer Blender). There's plenty of templates out there (BMW template is what I use) and let that run for a few hours.
