is your actual internet connection gigabit? Just because you can connect to the router at gigabit doesn't mean you can connect to the internet at gig.

why no dark mode?

You also need to make sure your router and modem both support gigabit.

I assume if the ISP upgraded or installed the hardware they would put stuff that's capable of gigabit but it doesn't hurt to check.

if you are in the USA:

not true. ISPs ALWAYS skimp on anything they can.

then that charge you $10/month for a garbage $20 router/modem combo

This is true. I have comcast and when I upgraded to gigabit I had to wait 10 days after my plan started to have a Comcast employee come out and swap the gateway

I would recommend just going to Costco and grabbing a modem that has the specs you need. It will be better than the cheap thing your ISP gives you and you will save money from not renting it.

I actually disagree. Certain ISPs in certain situations can give you a great deal. I did a little research and it turns out if you are on the Gigabit plan with comcast, they give you a gateway that normally costs $400 for $10/mo including replacement and support if it ever breaks which is a steal.

That is true if you wanted to get the same model and have a modem router two in one. But if you just need the modem, you can get the Netgear Nighthawk CM1100 which is a gigabit modem for $150. After two years you would have almost a 100% return on your investment.

Actually in some areas is more like $11 a month to $15 a month for a rental. Thats $132 to $180 a year in rental fees. I bought my own modem and router. The modem cost me like $80 when I bought it 5 years ago, so its well and paid off. The I recently bought cost $200. Any way you look at it, Im still ahead. I rather give a retailer the money than those fucking bastards at Comcast (Xfinity). Also, them having decent gateways is a new development. Their equipment historically has been shit.

Also another reason not to rent equipment from Comcast. They have a back door in to it. As in they can see all devices on your side of the network. No way in fuck Im giving them that level of access. With just a modem, the only access they is to check the stats, update the firmware and push configuration files.
