However i noticed modem selection with an rj11 port are slim and fairly pricey.

You need a eMTA. There is no way to get phone service working with out one of these modems. Not only are they pricey, but you have to make sure your provide supports the exact model you buy. Comcast is very particular about what they will allow for example. You want to buy a modem, you can do it all day long, you want one with phone support, good luck.

My suggestion is to see about putting what you currently have in bridge mode and then you should be good to use your PFsense box.

So we have a landline phone that uses rj11 and im currently looking for a new modem

So i need coax in, rj11 in, and Ethernet out.

However i noticed modem selection with an rj11 port are slim and fairly pricey. my question is, is there any way to convert this rj11 connector to an rj45 connector and plug it into something like a switch, or the router itself.

OR

i also found that most of the modems have a usb port on the back as well, could plugging something like this...

into that usb work as well?

No. It doesn't carry an Ethernet-signal, so connecting it to an Ethernet-port wouldn't work and it might even burn the device.

current config is just the isp's modem+router+AP combo, id like to make a pf sense router or even buy a routerboard router so i can run that into a switch and actually get ethernet to the parts of my house that need it. plus i dont really trust comcast in general so the less they are involved the better.

also id like everything except the modem to be rack mounted
