How can Network speed exceed HDD Speed?

I see you have a 10Gbe network, and your server uses Ironwolf pro.

When you are testing your 10Gigabit network, the file transfer over 1Gigabyte.

but your HDD only reads at 250MB/s

My question is... how is this even possible?

Certain raid configurations are faster than single drive speeds.

HDs are slow. That sounds a reasonable transfer rate for one. Your network is around 4x faster than that.

 

Either switch to a good NVMe SSD, or consider a ramdisk if you have enough space free.

 

Edit: on reread I might have misunderstood OP first time. Raid and/or cacheing could do it.

Several issues play into this... 

 

first the disk/array/controller you read the data from, the NIC configration of the server, then the machine receiving the data, that data array config/disks/controller and the NIC config... 

 

250 MByte/Sec are roughly 4 Gbit/Sec. the SATA interface is capable (the current ones) of 6gbit/sec per disk. 

 

So if reading from only one drive and not an array, 250 mbyte are quite nice. 

 

If one of the parties is a NAS like QNAP or Synology for example, well those may have 10 gbit nics, but usually don't have the cpu power needed to sturate that connection.
