Far Cry New Dawn Benchmark shows performance on Linux within 2% to 3% of performance on Windows

The kernel has been patched with a change that Valve proposed to increase performance and the latest release drivers have been used, so this is likely a sign of things to come rather than the current out of box experience with Linux. However, if more titles become like this with the latest changes, we could see a situation where the performance difference becomes negligible after they become part of mainstream Linux installations.

Proton is Wine + patches + DXVK + Faudio + D9VK + OpenVR + fonts + some steam bits. You can see that here:

Sweet, now if everyone would just drop EAC....

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Crossout is the only game I haven't bean able to run on linux. F U EAC.

I live in misery USA. my timezone is central daylight time which is either UTC -5 or -4 because the government hates everyone.

Until it's as "plug and play" as on Windows it just won't catch on no matter the performance numbers. Because when you at any point expect from user to put any kind of noodle into a terminal, you've already failed.

 

I'd love to see Linux be a 100% viable gaming option, but even I as an advanced user can't be bothered constantly fiddling with bunch of stuff to play a game. And that's not an unreasonable expectation. For most people updating graphic drivers is already a feat on its own, so going far beyond that just makes it a no-no entirely.

the sad thing is that most games with EAC will run and perform great but then you just get booted because Timmy boi thinks using Linux is "avoiding social responsibility"

Manjaro is pretty plug and play, unless you have a funky config you just download Lutris and shit works

Plug and play as in you install the game and you play it without once having to open a terminal for it. I could even take a slight performance hit, but not the hassle of dealing with the terminal. Coz every time I was doing anything with Linux, every bloody guide or recommendation began with "run terminal". Yeah, no thanks.

thats because its faster to do it in terminal and less chance of a fuck up. Just copy everything step by step instead of walking through potentially changing GUI stuff. i use Linux purely GUI, its not impossible nor is it hard.

Well the steam install quit several times for some reason, sound would try and play through my monitor speakers even if i set my headset set as default, and trying to figure out how to install Vivaldi was a pain. Not available through the default repository (had to go through AUR). Also, wtf isn't spotify available to install through the package management system (going to work on it this evening but it was late last night and went to bed)? BTW this is a very up to date computer with very popular and not cheap components so its no potato.

Steam install probly isn't manjaro as I had this problem on pop. Spotify is available through the aur and I don't know about sound.

Spotify is on the AUR, which you can get in the software install thing. I didnt have any issues installing Steam, just had to make sure i got the right version for the online features to work. Vivaldi is not a very popular browser but it shows in the software manager(with AUR enabled) ready to auto build, just did it and it works just fine. Havent had sound issues that were not caused by an unsupported soundcard so far, so no clue about that one.

Unfortunately, Windows is not the epitome of problem free computing either. I did a Windows 7 install the other day to do comparisons and Microsoft’s updater had updates failing because it couldn’t install them in the right order. I am not sure if it even properly installed them after fiddling with it. They stopped including a tool in their update roll ups around April and told system administrators to install the older updates first to install things were properly installed. It isn’t clear to me that their own software update tool followed their own advice. Doing it properly was enough of a pain that I decided to just ignore the possible issue. The system seems like it works now, so I don’t feel like touching it.

 

My experience on Linux has been better for me. I have even had Windows software (Google Earth VR) work just fine on Linux through Valve’s Proton when I could not figure out how to get working on Windows. It might be a lack of familiarity that kept me from troubleshooting it, but Microsoft Windows has never been a particularly transparent OS to facilitate such things. I understand that at least one of their own games (Zoo Tycoon) for Windows doesn’t even run on currently supported versions of Windows because they wouldn’t patch it after they made the decision to break the third party kernel based DRM that they never should have used on the game in the first place.

 

I would not call updating graphics drivers on Windows a particularly pleasant experience given the third party “driver cleaner” utilities people use to avoid problems. The idea of getting updates from your distribution just makes things easier, although it is certainly slower than if you were to directly get them. With nvidia, there is some inbetween, although you should always be installing their updates through the package manager to avoid the problems that the Windows “driver cleaners” attempt to solve.

 

That said, there are issues with any operating system. Windows seems to have more, although people have suffered through them so much that they have become unaware that they exist. :/

I used computers running MSDOS when I was young. Linux’s terminal is awesome is comparison. It definitely has a learning curve, although not nearly as much as MSDOS, which I still have yet to learn well. You generally appreciate the Linux terminal once you have learned to use it.

 

Having installed Windows recently for doing comparisons, I was rather unhappy at first when trying to find files or when I wanted to checksum something to ensure that there was no corruption in transit.

 

I ended up installing Cygwin. Using Cygwin, I could very easily search for files with regular expressions via find and grep in a way that not just showed me matches, but showed me where they were on the computer. There was no need to fiddle with the much less capable and more cumbersome Windows search. Cygwin itself is rather cumbersome compared to a Linux distribution though. Cygwin’s package management is fairly primitive. It’s integration with Windows could be best described as a series of brilliant hacks.

Which is great and all, but majority of people aren't going to learn how to use linux or it's terminal just for 2-3%.  It literally is going to have to be a turnkey package before people switch. 

 

I cut my teeth on dos, dr dos, early versions of menu programs including windows and geos and I still use Linux for my workbench PC,  but even I am too lazy to be bothered swapping from windows unless the carrot is much bigger than 2-3% improvement.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

I used Dos and Novelle back in the day too, i have used Terminal, and while i appreciate how powerful it is, i just can not be arsed with the complexity of it anymore, if i want to play a game i want it to be 3 click, launch steam, install game and play game.

That exactly what i did when i play Euro Truck Simulator 2 last night, in Linux. My DS4 controller and G27 wheel work out of the box too.
