Hi, I am doing a little project where I'm making a full custom water loop for cpu&gpu for £100, and I was thinking of also doing direct die cooling.

 

Obviously I'd have to remove the retention bracket, but after that, technically couldnt I just plonk the water block on with a bunch of washers around the back and have the cpu directly die cooled?

 

I hear that mounting pressure would be an issue and that I "dont want to crack" the die but really as long as the mounting pressure is uniform it should be fine right? With maybe just finger tight screws?

 

I also am aware that when the cooler is pulled off itll pull the CPU out too, but that also should not be an issue if it is pulled straight off?

 

Anyone see any issues with this that I'm missing??

Cracking a die is EXTREMELY easy. It's why nobody in their right mind runs direct die cooling daily. A small bump to the case can end up causing issues if you have a cooler tightened to the die itself.

Fair enough then! If you guys think it's that easy for things to go wrong I'll take your word for it!

 

It does surprise me though! The edges of the ihs must be taking a lot more pressure than I thought they would be!

It's more of a case.of the die can't take pressure at all

Its really not as difficult or dangerous as you make it out to be. Back in the day cpus didn't have heat spreaders. Look at amd Thunderbird cpu's. Millions used and sure, some Chipped, but it wasn't really widespread. Just go in with a steady hand and maybe hold off on the coffee until after the build.

Late for the game here, but I don't think the risk is as high as people say it is. I wounder how many people actually tried it them self before commenting on it?

Silicon is brittle, yes, but if you do it carefully it should be fine. If the waterblock on the cpu is attached correctly, no bumping of the case should do anything. Preparation is everything. Just take your time doing it.

I ran my 4790k direct die daily for a couple years using an EK block and their precise mount kit and never had a problem.

The only thing you really need to worry about is even mounting pressuring when installing the block.

During it's time i removed the block and cpu many times with out any issues, yes the cpu will get stuck to the block but as long as you pull straight up you shouldn't have any issues, just never try placing the cpu/block back down once it leaves the socket
