10% faster in single-core, 40% faster in multi-core. Don't forget that the 9400F is both locked at a low frequency (so slower in single-core) and has no HT/SMT so MUCH slower in multi-core. It also uses more power and runs hotter. I'd take a Ryzen 5.

Not everyone needs multicore. It's still $65 more.

Its a shit cpu. Doesnt  make sense. Buying a 2600 + b450 would still be a better choice than going with a 9400f

The 2600 is exactly the same price, but worse except for very multi core...

Return it. The 9400F is not worth the money when the vastly superior Ryzen 5 3600 exists.

@Damnkid as @5x5 suggested return the 9400f. Terrible value to performance and no reason to buy one really.

a ryzen 3600 is a much better choice here. Pair it with a B450 tomahawk (Max) and you’re set.

It will probably come with the bios already been upgraded, it's been a while since coffee lake refresh launched. However, if it's easy for you to return, then for the same price get the 2600 and a b450 motherboard such as the asrock b450 pro4. The 3600 is a better value cpu but the price difference may be out of your reach, and the 2600 is your next best thing

yeah i only have like 350 to spend right now thats why i went 9400f, andi got the motherboard on amazon for $77 the ram and a case and it was like 344 or something, this system is for some gaming and digital art, when tax return comes im prolly gonna build a whole new pc. i just need to upgrade my i5 7400 with 8 gigs of ram for right now. @Epimetheus @Stormseeker9 @5x5 when im drawing a 4k or 8k image it gets stuttery when i zoom in to clean up lines and such

The 9400F makes absolutely no sense then since it loses to even the 2600, let alone the 3600. Return it and buy a decent CPU for the money.

The i5 isn't terrible for gaming if you're aware of its many issues. For productivity though, just don't bother with intel

unless his mobo has bios flashback, I'd say he will need a 8th gen cpu to update..

it doesn't.

And since he's returning stuff anyway, might as well get a proper CPU like a 2600 or 3600 instead of the mess of a CPU that is the 9400F

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($129.20 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($114.89 @ OutletPC)

EDIT: CPU as some headroom for OCing, the motherboard is just fine, Crucial memory are Micron E-die and they can be OCed a fair amount, enough so you won't regret buying a 2600 instead of a locked Intel CPU.

Main System: Ryzen 2700, Asus Crosshair VII Hero, EVGA GTX 1080ti SC, 970 EVO Plus NVMe, Crucial Ballistix 3200mhz CL14, CM H500, CM ML240L cpu cooler.

Second System: Ryzen 2400G, Gigabyte B450 DS3H, RX 580 Nitro+, Kingston A400 SSD, Team T-Force 3200mhz CL15

If it ain't overclocked it ain't good...

Single-core is pretty similar mate - the 9400F is a low-clocked locked i5, not a 5GHz i9. The difference is 2-3% in single-core and 30% in multi-core which is what the OP is using for his image editing. Bloody hell.

let's just stop saying idiotic things while pretending to be smart. You're very clearly either a novice that still looks up things on userbenchmark, or an Intel fanboy. The 2600 is better in everything, especially multicore. And that's exactly what he needs for productivity. You get a slightly faster cpu in gaming and a way faster cpu in productivity. And you can still overclock it. You can't even make the point it's faster in adobe products, since the 9400f lacks any integrated gpu and thus all the related features. Please inform yourself before trying to sound smart

Google Express is currently offering 20% (Max $20) off first item ordered made through them again (still) - this is how I landed a $136 R7 1700 a while back.  If you can get the CPU from Google Express you can save another $20 if offered on there as well.

Heres an even cheaper R5 2600 $125.88 shipped

That's because after Ryzen 3000 launched, the site changed its rating system making It favor Intel by a ton, while sacrificing real world numbers. It's really unreliable

IF still in the return window I would jsut return and buy a 3600 based system.. if outside return window then I would say for $120 a 9400f is not a bad CPU its just not the best value ie price to performance is not great.

also as said an dneeds to e screamed from the hills... cpu.userbenchmarks.com is trash do nto trust it, in fact i suggest reporting through google your displeasure a them continually showing up high in search results due to their deceptive practices.
