Aptera 3-wheeled Star Trek car may finally become a reality

The cool 3-wheeled Aptera prototype was seen in Star Trek 2009. Shaped similarly to an airplane with electric FWD. Jay Leno reviewed it on his Youtube. But, they ran out of money and it died. But recently announced the original creators, Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony have gotten rights to the Intellectual Property again and working on making a prototype now with AWD, LED lighting all around, autopilot tech and more. Let's hope it becomes a reality. Over twice the efficiency of a Model 3 with 0-60 in 4 seconds or less.

No. Four wheels is inherently more stable and that's important during winters. The rear-tyre especially seems like a major pain-in-the-ass to change, and, again, one has to change tyres twice a year to/from winter-tyres. That thing is also ugly and it very much seems like a form-over-function thing -- perfect for people with more money than brains.

Wheel skirts are removable. In-hub motors with software for traction/stability control. The form it has is to function as a very aerodynamic vehicle. Prototype render not final product. Original car could do 0.8g turning

That's not true. Four wheels on a car are more stable than a three wheel design that has a single front wheel, but not one with two front wheels.

What no. The forces typically seen in driving a car usually aren't backwards and diagonal but 3 wheels is less table than 3 unless they are arranged in a perfect triangle

Four wheels is more traction on snow, if the car had 4 wheels it could also have more room for batteries. Not sure how that car would pass US safety standards unless it counts as a motorcycle with 3 wheels.

some of my issues from that video, the .3-.4g acceleration is very slow, and the .8g braking is also alarming. but the .8g cornering is nice to see.

Has anyone claimed that this would be an ideal year-rounder for a snowy environment? And that's a genuine question, because I looked through their page and the article and can't find anything about that. Why is that the one point that you're fixated on, what made you take a look at this and say, "winter," anyway? Especially considering the lack of storage space, the two-seat cockpit, and that it looks like a spaceship and not a car. Anyone thinking about purchasing something like this would definitely not, or at least should definitely not have winter in their mindset. I wouldn't purchase a Polaris Slingshot and then expect to drive to work in the winter, or even in the rain for that matter (but that's just because of a lack of roof). The Aptera would make either a fantastic summer car or a year-rounder in a warmer climate, but it should not be anywhere near the snow and I think the engineers and designers understand that. 

 

Similar to Tesla's origins, it's mostly just a technology showcase anyway. If it sold well and performed great then maybe they'll add another wheel in the future.

Too many variables that determine stability in snow. But Polaris' Slingshot, Can-Am's Spider, Elio's P3 and P4 builds, Vanderhall Motor Works' autocycles,and Morgan's 3-Wheeler, don't have stability issues at all, due to the two tires in front keeping the vehicle stable in turns.

 

The Mototrikes with stability issues have single wheels in the front. The angles that the single front wheel is subjected to are problematic at high speeds.

Seems like a nice choice for a to-go car on the weekends. I don't think I would use for long trips, but I would most certainly take this for my daily drive to school and work.

I have no stability issues with my 3 wheeled car. 3 wheels and light weight is better on snow than 4 wheels and over a tonne of weight to move, just depends on how shit the driver is.

The other problem is in roads that have not been cleared. I am thinking those days where cars with four wheels have cleared two nice tracks. That leaves the person with a three wheeler with a bit of a nightmare as the third wheel rides on the mound in the middle. I bet it is a shed load of fun though.

Take a look at Norway and how they have taken on electric cars in a huge way. Over half of new vehicles are EVs, many of their ferries are going full EV. Here is a part of the world with a lot of country inside the arctic circle, where the average annual temperature is just 5 degrees centigrade dropping well into minus territory in the winter. Yet EVs still work well there and are very desirable. Yes, batteries are less efficient at cold temperatures but good heat management circumvents a lot of that.
