So I bought a 244hz monitor and IT CAME WITH BUILT IN SPEAKERS

I didn't want this tbh, it's not on the box. I didn't look hard enough at the floor model it was just for sale and 244hz so I bagged it. Anyway.. I don't know what to do here. It's got a headphone jack.. do I use that or the one on the pc. The one on the pc runs through the back of the pc but the monitor one would run through the gpu. What's the best way to plug? I kinda didn't want to deal with monitor volume lol...

You're complaining because there's an extra feature that you are in no way or form forced to use?

Just plug into the PC as before, and select the same audio output in Windows. The speakers in the monitor don't matter if you don't use them.

true, but it's still bugs me.. the volume is set to 70/100 by default on the monitor itself. I tried even muting that but.. it's like having a speaker on in the background theres a slight echo basically to everything that I do I might as well use it.. But, then again. I duno about gpu volume. lmao.

eh, it's like would you listen to music with a gaming headset? No because you don't want a microphone hanging over your ear.

In most monitors there should be a setting to turn the speakers off or at least their volume to zero. If it doesn't have that then, you can just disable it in Windows.

So... uh... what's the problem here? So it came with built-in speakers, so what? Are you otherwise satisfied with your purchase? Does it have all of the other specifications that you wanted, at the price you expected to pay?

If the answer is yes, then you just got an additional optional feature with no downside.

That's because if you don't want to use the built-in speakers (which I assume are powered via HDMI or DP), you can simply disable the HDMI audio device via Windows, and never use them.

Do you have other speakers, or were you strictly using headphones before?

Not really. The speakers, if you don't use them, literally affect nothing. They're not in the way, they don't degrade image-quality. If you don't use them, it's as if you didn't have them; just disable the audio-device in the settings and POOF -- it's gone.

I'm just a very OCD person who would literally go out and buy another monitor that Doesn't have speakers on it. lol. Which I might do.. But that's just because I'm obsessing over it atm. lol. Thank's guys. and I know I can disable it in windows. Also, I tried plugging headphones into the monitor and was just eerily put off by it. so Gunna switch back.

EDIT: I think the best result here is to not disable the speakers on the monitor but plug headphones into the computer itself and have it auto configure to headphone output incase I ever unplug the headphones and can listen from the monitor. win win.

uhm... lots of people listen to music with a gaming headset - because that's the only headphones they own, or because they primarily listen to music on their gaming PC anyway. Aside from that, most gaming headsets allow you to reposition the microphone out of the way when not in use. Aside from that, as @WereCatf (seriously just noticed the f on the end) points out, this is an even less big deal than your not-a-big-deal scenario with a gaming headset.

Just disable the Speakers if you don't want to use them.

Can you elaborate as to why you were "put off" by plugging your headphones into the monitor? Please explain, in detail, why? Did it sound different? Was there some glitch or hum?

I decided to leave them enabled but plug headphones in(the computer not the monitor). Instead of disabling everything.

That would be how most people would use speakers, yes. Set the Headphones as the Default Audio Device, and you should be good.

Right, there's no point in physically disabling the device(the monitor).

Personally, I'd actually like to have speakers on my monitor. At the moment I have separate speakers on my desk, but they take up quite a bit of space. Built-in speakers are generally not particularly good quality, but, well, for most things I do on my PC they'd be more than adequate and they'd free up some space on my desk, allowing me to stuff more things under the display.

I'm not an audiophile, though, and I don't listen to music, so my needs and wishes are obviously different from OP's.

Even if you were an audiophile, a good pair of headphones would eliminate the downsides of your scenario - use the built-in speakers for YouTube and browsing the web - pop the headphones on for music, Netflix, gaming, etc.

@WereCatf My monitor has two 2W speakers and while they do sound pretty terrible, they are great for when the family wants to watch some vacation or family videos.

I'm mainly a competitive gamer so I need the best reaction time, ect. So headphones for sure. Also, ambient sound is just as important that's why I didn't want any other speakers even near my but that's fine. I just figure if I leave everything as default and then use the headphones I'm good. I tried disabling and turning down in menus but it got all "cramped".. just going to live and let be and go as is. Thanks.

My 144Hz ASUS also has them. Not sure why would one spend 350€ on a gaming monitor and then use crappy built in speakers. They did come in handy just once as a basic replacement lol. They don't work since I run DisplayPort, but was possible with HDMI.

Btw, you probably meat 144Hz monitor right? Coz 244Hz doesn't exist. Those are 240Hz. Anyway, use DisplayPort instead of HDMI and they won't output any sound ever since DisplayPort doesn't support audio.

DP most certainly does carry audio:

Well, I never get any audio through, only with HDMI. I guess that's a design decision then for my monitor. Although a weird one if DP supports audio...

Very weird. Must have been a cost cutting measure. DP can 100% do audio exactly the same way HDMI does it.

It can even do audio over a DP to HDMI adapter.

My 144hz has speakers too. Strange mix. Amazing refresh rate, worse audio ever. :P

But I guess at this point they are a few pennies to add, if the chipset already covers them (doubt any HDMI chipsets come without audio available) the plastic/fitting etc cannot be more than a £/$1 or so.
