Android is becoming a bloated mess

At idle my s10e uses 3 gb of ram. High ram usage isn't bad in fact it tends to speed up loading the issue is its not freeing up when its needed. The android os uses (says so in dev opt.) 1.8gb of ram usage. When I have multiple apps open they won't stay open when I multitask (aka they close to free up ram). In contrast my linux install on my desktop uses 1.5gb..... with 2 firefox tabs open... 1 being a youtube video. Phones are coming out with 12gb of ram and im starting to see why like jesus android is becoming slow and such a resource hog. Does anyone know why my phone is having issues multitasking (4ish apps). Am I wrong is android leaner its just samsungs ram management and if so can I help mitigate the issue? Conversation and advice are both welcomed.

Which apps specifically?  What are they eating for RAM, have you dug in and looked?

Is it actually slow or are you basing that suggestion on your annoyance with how your S10e handles for you (not fair since Samsung hardly uses a stock Android ROM, have you compared your user experience to that of a Pixel user?).  Also worth noting that RAM should be getting used, that's how the phone improves performance before it has to over-fetch data from the nand storage, so to say that it's bad that the phone prefers to use ram first doesn't mean it's a bad behavior really, it's all about how resource use is coded and optimized (and comparing it's ram use against a different platform and architecture to boot isn't apples to apples fyi).

there is a reason why people tend to favor AOSP roms. LineageOS 16 builds on my h815 uses around 900mb ram total, leaving me around 2gb ram.

This sounds more like a ram management issue and probably Samsung's end. This also might be one or more of the apps you're multi-tasking with not playing nice. I have an S9 sitting at 2.5GB idle, 1GB free and 514MB reserved and I'm not having any issues so it might be an app misbehaving?

Interestingly, I had the same experience with RAM management on my former Samsung S8, it would always typically be at 60% RAM used even with a few apps like Discord, Gmail, Twitter, and YouTube open. I didn't find it was particularly slow but if I opened anything more, the previous apps I had kept in the app tray refreshed and weren't kept in cached state.

Android runs on a custom Java VM and the RAM allocated you see in Linux using htop isn't even remotely the same as the one you see on a Linux desktop.

 

The android VM is ALWAYS allocating more memory for programs even if they don't use it

Linux desktop? That's taken from my xubuntu install and task manager says the same.

What i've taken from this is that android likes to use more ram to keep things speedy but it should lean up when ram is needed. My phone seems to have difficulty doing that hopefully as updates come out ill see an improvement. Thanks everyone.

CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER MY IOS SIPPIN a few hundred Mbs with 14 tabs open. That's not super accurate to actually how much you need. Many times programs just say at most I could use 2gbs so imma reserve 2gbs just in case

The Samsung SkinOS has so many options in the battery section of Device Care.

Defaults to Learn your Usage itself and use algorithms pretty sure..

 

Specifically tell it to do things more to your liking,..

Fine tooth comb that app section in the battery (ram management too I guess if you want to double check settings,..but the settings usually found in the Battery advanced menu for app control)

 

App specific..Sleep more sleep less, that kind of stuff.

 

Maybe you can fine tune some apps.

 

Android loves reopening closed services and caching all sorts, online sync opens many apps again in the background as a service..

 

And some apps just don't let you control them and they perform like crap and can affect your phones perf in small ways.. like a bloated endlessly loaded service on idle with flickers of usage all day.. it can happen.
