I just updated my OG pixel to android 10 and after poking around for a bit I noticed that it will no longer be guaranteed security updates after next month, which also means it may no longer be supported for regular telephone support. Should I start looking for a new phone that will actually work as a phone after next month?

I wouldn't start looking for a new phone unless there's something physically wrong with the hardware on your phone, or unless the phone is too slow for your needs. Instead, I recommend checking out XDA-Developer's site for custom ROMs & updates for your Pixel 1 phone, and keep using it until it becomes too outdated for your needs.

You can relax. ? Your phone will keep working after October.  You just won't get OS updates after that.  Now if you're concerned about being left vulnerable to future exploits, that might justify a new phone.  But if you just want to keep using your Pixel for a while longer?  Keep using it until you're ready.

First, your phone will still work as a phone even after it becomes officially unsupported. You may or may not receive updates as Google publishes them; it's possible to actually still get security patches pushed to you, it's just Google is under no obligation to keep doing it. This doesn't make your phone unusable, and there hasn't been a major issue when it comes to exploits coming from outdated software, but you may be lacking certain bug fixes and improvements. Your mileage will vary as the phone gets older.

If your phone suits your needs currently, then I wouldn't worry. Keep using it until it doesn't. But have you seriously had that phone for three years? Good on you if that's the case.

Yeah this phone's pretty sweet, I think I got it two years ago now. The only thing I'm worried about is google's chart that says they will no longer guarantee telephone support for this phone after next month. I wonder if that means they will just shut me out of cell service when they don't want to support it anymore.

No, it just means that Google isn't obligated to lift a finger if you require assistance for your device. Though there are probably a few staff that will lend assistance anyway. Google's support staff is more than a few steps above the usual outsourced call centers.

Oh sick. I didn't read it like that before but that does make sense. And I feel like I'm mostly self sufficient when it comes to genuine phone issues, seeing as I've never needed Google support services in the first place. Hopefully I'm good. Thanks!
