Q: when Intel planing add pci express gen 4  to Intel based laptops.

Why would you even need it? PCI-e 3.0 is sufficient to anything you could possible need from a Laptop.

 

But to answer your question, not coming this year since Ice Lake 10nm processors still uses PCI-e 3.0 revision.

He probably wants to use eGPU and gen4 will have less of a bottleneck than using 4 gen3 lanes as is currently the standard.

Even then we know that external GPUs are still far from an ideal solution performance wise... I don't think something like the 5700XT managed to improve things just by having PCI-e 4.0 but I haven't seen anything recently so who knows.

 

If we do get Zen 2 based mobile then PCI-e 4.0 might be a thing on this spectrum but sadly AMD has still been very quiet about entering the mobile segment in any meaningful way.

its not going to be a software update. you are going to have to buy a new laptop to get pcie 4 when intel do release it

Don't get me wrong, I agree fully. eGPU is very janky and in a glorified alpha state of you ask me. Was just giving context
