Hey guys. I need some insight here. I am starting to get more into video editing, and I wanted to list my current System specs, and see what you guys would suggest. Currently It's mostly 1080p/30fps video from my dash cam, but I'd like to have something that could render the video faster too as well as when I do videos on my iPhone and eventually my DSLR when I get one again. Also, If this could ever be made into a video, I'd drive my self to you guys to do the upgrade. It would be fun. SO, that being said, here are my specs.

  • CPU:      Intel Core i5-6600K
  • MB:       Gigabyte GA-Z170mx-Gaming 5
  • RAM:    Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz 16gb (8x2)
  • NVME:  Intel 660p 1TB
  • SSD:      Samsung 850 EVO 500gb
  • HDD:    Multiple WD HDD, 1x2TB 7200rpm, 1x3TB 5400RPM
  • GPU:     NVIDIA 970 Asus Turbo 4GB
  • PS:

Again, Any thoughts on where I should go with this? I thought about trying to switch over to AMD Ryzen to get more cores since my chipset won't let me upgrade to the latest gen CPU and the core i7 7000 series cost as much as the new Ryzen CPU and MB that I've been looking at. Let me know your thoughts everyone.

It's between Hitfilm Express and Adobe Premier

adobe premiere its intel only as the iGPU together with an Nvidia GPU allows for un-presidented rendering speed. equivelent to their 7980XE using an 8700k (yes intels HEDT plattform is useless)

if its hitfilm you can probably head for AMD, havent seen much benchmarks from it tho.

I tend to use hitfilm more, and when we tried rendering 4k video that was 30 minutes long, it took over 6 hours on adobe for some reason.

did you enable quicksync and hardware acceleration? that should drop that down hard.

if you use hitfilm. how much are you looking to spend?

other than the video card, I was hoping too use as much of my current hardware as possible. so I was thinking, upgrade the CPU, MB, and Video Card and upgrade to 32gb of ram. was trying to stay under 800

Corsair 750 RM

should be fine that one.

do you mind having to go through some USB flashback before installing the CPU? also its looking like i would suggest waiting to upgrade the GPU or find a used gtx 1070 for ~200$ (mining card is fine)

updating BIOS without using the CPU. you need a USB flashdrive essentially and be able to follow a relativly straight forward process. it allows you to save quite a bit on the motherboard by getting B450. updated boards are very rare in the US it seems.

yeah, I don't mind that. altho i've never done a bios update without the cpu before

Cool. I should note that the MB needs to fit in my case. It's an MicroATX

well that sort of removes x570 as an option then.

do you have a store that can update the BIOS for you nearby?

otherwise its these two boards

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/KZLwrH/asrock-x570m-pro4-micro-atx-am4-motherboard-x570m-pro4

i would avoid the x570 Pro4. its an ok budget board, but overall not fantastic.

this ITX board is fantastic, but it limits you in terms of expansion PCIe slots.

Considering I only paid 100.00 for my current board back in 2016, and I don't use any expansion slots right now, either should be fine, was hoping to save money on the MB and splurge on the CPU if possible thought LOL.

there is this board.

it should be updated. tho not 100% sure. at worst you will need to order a bootkit from AMD. its VRM is good enough to run the 3950x stock, but dont do any overclocks (not that overclocking 3rd gen is worth t anyways).

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 3.8 GHz 12-Core Processor  ($499.99 @ Best Buy)
Motherboard: ASRock B450M/AC Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($89.99 @ Amazon)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory  ($69.99 @ Amazon)

it will allow you to get the 3900x within budget with headroom to save for a GPU. note: never buy AIOs as you will want the airflow generated by the aircooler.

Thank you for taking the time to help me figure this out. You really Didn't have to do this. If i remember correctly didn't linus just do a video about the number of cores on video editing software doesn't decrease render time anything over 8 full cores? (just wondering if you saw that or if maybe i'm day dreaming that)

that was the case with Adobe rendering iirc. not other software. at worst you will have 4 cores to do other things like editing another video in the background. or play games. or whatever you choose to do.

another thing. keep up on BIOS updates on the motherboards. update when you get it, and update every other month untill next year. 3rd gen is still new and some stuff has yet to be ironed out.

Like watching more of Linus Tech Tips on youtube? LOL I'm going to go to parts picker and put together my current system so you can see what I have right now.

i would suggest most other people for benchmarks than LTT.

gamer nexus (tech jesus) and hardware unboxed usually are better places to watch benchmarks.

edit: and yes it would be nice to see you full build in PCP, but its not strictly neccesary

the only downside is that i would suggest not using the AIO, but you can get good looking and good aircoolers instead. i can suggest a few to look at if you want to.

do you want to avoid big towercoolers like the nh-d14?
