Not sure about how PPI affects gaming

I'm all about big screens, but I'm not sure whether I should go with a 27 inch or 32 inch 1440p display.

 

I know that a 32 inch 1440p display has about the same ppi as a 24 inch 1080 display. But does that mean that if I game on a 32 inch 1440p display it'll seem like I'm using 1080p and that I wasted money by getting a higher resolution monitor?

depends on how close you sit to the monitor. If you're closer to it then it looks nicer. If you want a bigger, more detailed image, it certainly does not look the same.

What's your budget/country and what kind of games do you play? Also what CPU/GPU?

Also try overclock.net or something, should have some more technical people around.

I have an RTX 2080 and an i7 8700. I was considering a 3440x1440 ultrawide, but I'm afraid the card won't be able to handle AAA titles at this resolution after a year or so.

All you have to do is drop down to medium-high settings to keep your fps high

Depends on if u only ever run ur games at native resolution.

 

The thing with a upgrade in resolution with monitors is that people tend to run their games at native resolution, which means if u go form a 1080p display to a 1440p display, ull also be rendering games at 1440p.

The rendering resolution will affect how good the image looks far more than the monitor upgrade.

 

This is something u can test urself. What ever monitor u have now, be it 1080p or 1440p, try rendering the game at a higher resolution. Assuming u dont have terrible levels of blurry AA enabled, like TAA and FXAA, u should notice a significant difference in visual fidelity.

A 1080p screen for example, running a game at 1080p, isnt using the full capabilities of the 1080p screen, as games dont render everything displayed on a pixel for pixel basis. There will be things of in the distance in a 3d rendered space that is sub 1080p thats what LOD settings do to help perofrmance, ths results in objects in the distence looking aliased, but thats not due to the monitors resolution, thats due to the rendering resolution.

However if u run that same game at 4k on a 1080p display, suddenly a lot more of the screen is now being rendered at a resolution that uses the full capabilities of the 1080p display.

 

While doing that test the results seem rather obvious, thats also what is happening when u upgrade a monitor from 1080p to 1440p and then run everything at that new higher native resolution.

 

So in answer to ur question. YES you will notice a difference becouse ull be rendering games at 1440p not 1080p.
