This discussion is OK as long as it does not promote or condone pirating of the software being discussed.

I see so many builds every day buying windows for a hundred and fifty quid.

ive always just spent 2 quid for a code on eBay.

im starting a business I’ll come to your house and install windows for the same amount of money you was going to give Microsoft? How’s that? Gimme ur money

But it’s like 2 quid is what u find on the floor

150 is difference between 30fps and 60fps.

srsly worth it that much?

It's not about it being worth it, but rather a moral decision.

If you're okay with supporting credit card fraud in exchange for saving some money, that's really up to you.

windows licenses do not affect FPS

otherwise reviewers would state whether or not they were using windows activation in their benchmarks

also the cheap windows keys on eBay were acquired through illegal means like credit card theft, buying them encourages more credit card theft.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Its a product, you pay for it. That expense pays those that take the time and effort to create it. If you dont want to spend the money then dont buy or use it.

Pirating or not paying the asking price is not right.

People are so willing to pay the $1,000.00+ "apple tax" but its different when its come to buying a $200.00 microsoft product. There is almost no sense in this, the logic doesnt add up.

No they are ex oem keys no credit card theft.

fps I’m talking about the money you save. With 148 quid you can probably go 1050ti to 1060 6gb

No, because you can buy full keys (non OEM) from these cheapo sources.

  • 3 weeks later...

Personally i wouldn't buy Windows from anywhere else than microsoft.com or ligit retailer.

It's not because i enjoy paying full price. But i rather pay full price than knowing what scumbags i support by going the cheapo route..

Pretty much, yes.  As said earlier, paying for the OS supports it's development.  If I wasn't willing to pay for it, I could just use Linux for free and not even pay the 2 quid you mentioned.  I'm running Mint on my laptop and it works fine for me.  Steam has done a lot to make the gaming experience better on Linux than it used to be.

It seems to me that you really hate paying for stuff. But i don't think you grasp the subject of the "scumbags" that i reffer to. Maybe you should look closer into what you support by going the route you've choosen. Because it's not just people who are trying to survive. In most situations this also involves money loundry, human trafficing and drug dealing.

And buying a nice new Gucci wallet also supports children in sweatshops in China.

i save money where I can, and how Microsoft rips people off I feel no remorse.

I honestly find it morally wrong to pay for windows. It's basically the equivalent to free2play games.

My surface came with Windows preinstalled. And my self build computer uses the free OS I got ages ago. Anyone remember the free windows 8 upgrades they gave to windows 7 users? I got windows 8 for free back then and that key turned into a windows 10 after some point. I don't know why you would pay for w10 when they gave away keys for free a few years ago.

ofc i'd rather not pay $100+ for Windows, but it's what is morally right and i would do that, i'd rather not be supporting some people that are possibly committing crime

Dose not seem like much money when my CPU is $700CAN on its own, or that as a user I run the OS for multiple years.

But then again most people who are interested in $2 keys truly don't understand how little money paying full price actually is for the overall value. And honestly don't care nor understand they are feeding an illegal market.

And so does buying off Microsoft.

@The Torrent  the keys you buy for cheap are not 100% legal.

Especially if you build a system to be used in a company (as work PC), you could get fined huge amount of money for using such licenses...

For example, a lot of those keys are keys that are part of a package of keys bought by a company (and they get some bulk purchase discount) and they're meant to be used only for the computers inside that company or by remote employees of that company. In such scenario, as you're not an employee, in theory it's illegal to use your Windows with such a license.

As for why buy it... think about dude. I bought my Windows 7 Home Premium for around 100$ probably 5 years or so ago, and I'm still using it. I could probably use it for a few more years.

But let's just say 5 years... that's 60 months or ~ 1.5$ a month. A bus ticket or a hamburger costs that much here... so are you saying you can't afford to NOT eat a burger once a month and pay a one time license fee?

It sounds expensive but think of it as paying in advance for something.

Now, I didn't buy Windows 10 yet because I kinda disagree on the whole "pay for a license, but at same time agree to send data to Microsoft about behavior and shit from which Microsoft makes money" ... I'm of the principle that if I buy something, I own that something and I should be able to fully control how I use it the product.

Some keys are fake, if they can get $3 from you then they can get $3 from 10,000 other people multiplied by the other scam seller profiles and sites they sell their fake stuff on.

When you're building a computer where the hardware only costs $600, throwing an extra $100 on top of it for the mainstream OS to even use your computer, is ridiculous as a percentage of the total cost. Also, there are no WHQL drivers and support for newer processors and chipsets on even the last Windows version (8.1), 6th gen Intel and FX are old now. Forcing someone into buying a new copy of your software that could be as much as 20% of the cost of their system, sucks. Maybe if Microsoft didn't release a new version of Windows every 3-4 years, or the previous versions were compatible with new hardware, people wouldn't be so incentivized to purchase those keys.

All that said, you'd be a fool to use one of those eBay keys in a professional environment where you have legitimate liability. Which brings me to another point, if the "Home" version of the OS cost $49, and the "Professional" version cost $149, less people would complain. Get the money out of the sector that has it.

I've bought legitimate copies of Windows few times in the past, I still have retail boxes for Windows 7 and 8... but then when the 10 came out, I used a free upgrade option, and was able to use it few more times on few laptops. Right now I still have my desktop with one of those upgraded licenses. But when it's time to build a new one, my question is... Can I transfer the license to a new machine? I've done it in the past with W7 and 8, using the activation by phone, but since the virtual license of W10 doesn't have an easily accessible serial number, do any of you guys know if transferring a license to new hardware is still an option?

Everyone always seems to talk about Windows copies like one can only be used on one computer, but it hasn't been a case in the past.

Because it's the right way to pay Windows. You buy it full price, and you support MS.

2$ keys on eBay are often acquired illegally, and even if they are legit, you are not going to support Microsoft. It's just a legal and a support factor, nothing else.
