So... Here we are ! I announced in his speech he woukd do it, and now he's trying to do it...

White House considers new project seeking links between mental health and violent behavior

Bob Wright, the former NBC chair and a Trump friend, is one of the proposal’s supporters.

The White House has been briefed on a proposal to develop a way to identify early signs of changes in people with mental illness that could lead to violent behavior.

Supporters see the plan as a way President Trump could move the ball forward on gun control following recent mass shootings as efforts seem to be flagging to impose harsher restrictions such as background checks on gun purchases.

The proposal is part of a larger initiative to establish a new agency called the Health Advanced Research Projects Agency or HARPA, which would sit inside the Health and Human Services Department. Its director would be appointed by the president, and the agency would have a separate budget, according to three people with knowledge of conversations around the plan.

HARPA would be modeled on DARPA, the highly successful Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency that serves as the research arm of the Pentagon and collaborates with other federal agencies, the private sector and academia.

The news dates August, 22nd, he announced it on August, 5th in his speech!

Can someone give me a logical explanation WHY it is not discussed more thoroughly in the media? I don't understand why people act as if it was of no consequence for their primordial freedoms. Even more so when you see where he's going to get his info from...

I just don't understand...

So that article is kind of misleading. At least in one regard,

We already have background checks for firearms purchases in the US. If you want to buy a firearm from a licensed gun dealer (any gun store, or anyone with a booth at any gun show) you must undergo a background check, which is performed (at least in my state) by a system maintained and operated by the State Police (which, for those who aren't from the US, are police that have a state wide jurisdiction. Unlike local police which are confined to a specific county or city).

The background check form is required by federal law, to be maintained by the FFL dealer, in perpetuity and the ATF can check this paperwork at any time without a warrant or reason. Meaning once you fill out this paperwork, the form is kept by the dealer, forever constituting a record of this transaction, and includes the serial number of the firearm being purchased. This constitutes our firearms registry that the government claims we do not have (but totally do have).

The gun show loophole is a myth made up by ignorant journalists who couldn't be bothered to actually do in depth research. It boils down to "go to gun show, see private citizen walking around with a gun with a "for sale tag" hanging from it, purchase consists of cash transaction between one private citizen and another.", they call it the gun show loophole because this is a common thing at gun shows, at least in my state.

Now, you are required to present the weapon you want to sell, to state police, to ensure that it is unloaded, upon entering any such gun show in my state. Failure to do so is likely to result in at least getting tasered, or more possibly, getting shot.

Universal background checks would be the equivalent of passing a law requiring ID checks for illegal drug sales. You cannot regulate a transaction that you have no awareness of or control over. And there are already severe penalties in place for knowingly selling a firearm to someone who is not allowed to have one, as well as being a straw purchaser (basically the same thing but different order of events).

How is this tech news.

It is in the sense that this "HARPA" is going to be the first agency to combine informations from Smart Devices, including Apple Watches, Fitbits, Amazon Echos, and Google Homes in order to identify "neurobehavioral signs" of "someone headed toward a violent explosive act."

Do you see how this is related to "tech" and to "news"?

-snip-

Please concentrate on the main information and not on the detail...

And the article is not misleading regarding this detail as it's simply citing What Trump said and giving some background facts.
