I don't know why or how this is happening, but my FreeNAS server only boots if one of the two sockets is occupied. The board I'm running is a SuperMicro X8DTU-F with (intended) dual X5650s and initially 24GB of ECC memory. I was able to get it to boot once with both CPUs installed, but now it just power cycles once it hits the loading screen. The CPUs are good, the sockets are good, I've tried all single and dual cpu combinations and RAM combinations. System boots with one cpu in either socket with any amount of RAM, just not both. No idea what's going on or how to begin solving this issue.

Also not sure if this is better suited in Servers and NAS or CPUs and Motherboards... mods help? Thanks!

Do other oses work fine. Seem slike an hardware issue to me.

I installed windows on it a few months ago and it showed 12c24t just fine

Thing is it'll post once, then revert to power cycling.

It's doing it right now with just one cpu in either socket so I'm back to trying RAM again.

thing is this motherboard (f or not) is really common and so are dual x5600 systems so I'm kinda stumped as to what's happening. Beep code is also inconsistent and not in the manual either.

I may just run memtest 86 for all the sticks and see, though I think that's kinda a stretch.

I'm running two x5670 Xeons with 64 Gigs of RAM on  FreeBSD with no problems. So I doubt it's a freenas or FreeBSD issue. Can you try booting up a live FreeBSD USB stick? Also those Supermixro boards need to have dual 8pin power connectors even if only one  CPU is installed.

Here's the thing, I'm now pretty certain that it's a power issue somehow. Perhaps just dirty power from the wall or something. Either way none of the problems all point towards any one component and with some help from a friend I have verified that all the parts are functional.

Though getting my HBA to recognize my drives is a whole other issue now...
