SEAGATE BARRACUDA 2TB PROBLEM? (ST2000DM008)

Hello, 2 days ago i bought new HDD for big size games and i'm not sure if its a problem with HDD but it's really weird and i can't find any other solutions.

First of all, i wanna ask are these good results for this HDD? because i never seen this before.

This is new one that i bought 2 days ago and i think i have issue with it. (https://imgur.com/a/LBBN1MG) This one is just right after i download something on Steam(yes in this case i paused the download) (https://imgur.com/a/qmlHRxz)

So the problem is that i have issue with downloading on Steam. First of all no problem it reaches to max 70-80 mb/s, but in a few mins later like 3-5 or 10 minutes (https://imgur.com/a/x9SOUkz), download speed is going down all way to 0 mb/s then it's spiking to max 10mb/s and then it goes back to 0 mb/s and all over again, in this case i can't finish the download... (https://imgur.com/a/zSUTaT8) So at this point, i tried to pause the download and wait like just to give some break (10-15 minutes) later i resumed the download and everything went normal to max speed (70-80 mb/s), then! 3 mins later issue is back and it's still going down to 0 mb/s then it's spiking again . I've tried to download it on my old HDD, and it has stable speed but only max 40-45mb/s which it's normal because its old HDD.

I've checked several times my internet speed and everything is GOOD so i don't think so if its my internet speed.

I hope somebody will help me... Sorry if my English is bad, i hope you guys understand what im trying to say.

 

And no, i can't afford for 2TB "SSD" :P

If it randomly drops to 0 MB/s then it has something to do with either your sata controller, read head is faulty, or the pcb that controls the drive is faulty. But you can try running Crystal Disk Mark: https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskmark/ and checking Crystal Disk Info if there is something with the drive. I also have to add that it could also be Windows' drive sleeping in power settings.

In power settings its set to "never" for HDD

I'm not sure what is sata controller, is it a thing where you plug SATA cable? I mean, if you think i should plug into other SATA port, i can try it if you say. I have Windows 10 version 1903.

It might seem that your drive is failing. The Read Error Rate value is really low, since you don't want it close to normalize which is 67 for yours, and from the screenshot it is at 74. The other clue is that the Hardware ECC Recovered value is really high. I would recommend to check all your connections to the drive first, it could be a loose sata cable or power cable, then try another sata sable to see if that one is faulty.

Are you sure about it? What about this? : https://imgur.com/a/t9vFjSK (It's the old one and i think it has worse Read Error Rate than new one.)

That is a healthy drive with the Error Rate, from what I've read the first 16-bit in the raw value tells you the drive errors for Seagate. If it is all zeros, you are fine. But your 2TB drive has a high Hardware ECC Recovered which is more concerning.

So how do i fix it? Which plugs do you mean? SATA?

If it doesn't work out, should i plug into other SATA port? Is there a risk of plugging into different SATA  port?

You can try that. Just make sure you power down your pc and switch off the psu if your psu has a switch before doing it, to reduce risk of static damage.

No problem. I've had this problem before with a Toshiba drive where it would drop to 0 MB/s and hold it there, due to a damaged to the disk platters.

But was your problem with moving files to different HDD? It never went to 0mb/s for me while moving a big file from NEW HDD to my other HDD (https://imgur.com/a/FoVxG7g), AND moving from OLD HDD to NEW HDD (https://imgur.com/a/aAHGqeD) thing is that something is wrong with HDD and with downloading files. Forgot to mention that my HDD has 256mb cache, idk if its any difference with cache, i don't even know what does it do but a lot HDD's has 64 MB cache.  I just tested the download in EA Origins and seems like it's kinda stable but it goes down from 55-60 mb/s to 15/11 mb/s for 3-5 mins so its still same thing but it never goes to 0mb/s but to min 11mb/s.

This only happened when I moved files to the HDD; anyways it was toast. The cache is for the storage of files that needs to be accessed by the CPU later on but not really needed stuff, so that doesn't matter. So what you are saying is it that it's fine, when you transfer files from the new 2TB HDD to the old 1TB. But it's when you are moving files from the old to new it's dropping down but not all the way to 0 MB/s? If you are moving a lot small files, the speed will drop a lot, while large files will move at a much higher speed which is a normal thing.

Pop open Crystal Disk Info again and check Hardware ECC Recovered on the 2TB, if it has changed a significant amount, then something is wrong with that drive.

 

It's not dropping too much when i transfer to another HDD, it was stable with 100-120mb/s then it dropped to 70mb/s for 3 sec so i don't have any issue when i transfer files from new to old/old to new. It's now 84/67/0/00000E144E09 (While i'm playing the game)

Alright, I will recommend you to install SeaTools for Windows and see if your drive is having any issues: https://www.seagate.com/ca/en/support/downloads/seatools/#downloads. Seagate says their program is more accurate for their products so if it doesn't detect anything wrong, I guess it is safe to say your HDD is fine.

Do the S.M.A.R.T Check. Then if you want, do a short drive self test or short generic. You can also do the long generic if you want over the short generic, it would just be longer.

I just checked the power/sata ports so everything is plugged with no any problems and I also plugged into other SATA port. The problem is still not resolved, i still have problem with 0 mb/s :(

Is this happening when you download or file transferring from another drive? Can you please list your specs for me?

When i download as i explained it before. It never went down to 0mb/s when i'm moving files to another HDD just only when i download.

Here are my specs :
GPU - MSI GTX 980 4GB
CPU i7 4790k
PSU Corsair CX Series 750W
DDR3 - Kingston HyperX FURY 2x8GB 1866MHz CL10
Motherboard - MSI Z97 Gaming 5
