Laptop for linux dev + casual gaming and music production in win

Hi,

I'm looking for a high performance laptop to work mainly with Linux: programming, VM's, AI tools (like Tensorflow, Keras)... developing software that uses a lot of threads and resources.

In my free time I like to play games from time to time and record, mix and produce music. I'll use Windows for gaming and producing music and Linux for everything else.

 

I'm looking for a laptop with these specs:

15.6"

Intel I7

Dual channel 16GB DDR4 or more (expandable in the future)

NVIDIA dedicated GPU with CUDA support

PCIe NVMe SSD (if it has support for SATA HDD is a plus)

Numeric keypad (this is important to me)

Thunderbolt 3 is a plus but not essential

Screen quality is not essential, I'll use an external monitor most of the time

 

Max budget: $2000

 

I'm not too much at the gaming look of some models. If it has a more discreet look better, although it is not essential.

Weight is not a problem. I will only move it from my desk a few times per month.

 

For now I have found two models that fit quite well with what I am looking for:

- Dell G5 5590 (my fav so far)

- Lenovo Legion Y540

 

I've read that both have overheating problems that can be minimized tuning a little bit some things in the BIOS.

 

What do you think of my choices? Is there any other model I should look at?
