Do NVME get that hot, and how reliable are they?

Hi. I’m either going to rock a) 250gb nvme + 1tb 2.5 SSD or b) 1tb nvme

before purchasing though I’d like to know about nvme’s reliability and endurance compared to regular sata SSDs? Are they worth it for general use and gaming (not dealing with huge files on a daily basis) and is their temp. a problem?

Ty.

As far as my experience goes how hot they get is dependent on workload and which SSD you buy. I have a Samsung 960 PRO and it doesn't get very warm even when there's a lack of airflow across the motherboard. Meanwhile I've heard other makes and models getting quite hot.

I can't remember who said it but I was informed that the NAND memory actually benefits from being a little on the warm side (the controller not so much). I'd say unless you're constantly swapping large files then a heatsink really isn't necessary. If you can find one for about the same cost as a SATA M.2 drive (1TB for ~$100-$150) then yeah, go for it.

Personally, if the M.2 gets hot to the point where you can't keep your finger on it then I'd consider a heatsink. Cooler than that it's fine (just how I like to handle it. Other peoples opinions will vary).

I also have a 960 pro which doesn't really get hot... I also have a few Intel 660p's I picked up on sale and have put in the machine that are compatible. They, while not as fast as the 960, also run very cool and are still 2-3x faster than a traditional sata drive.

Btw the 660p's are back on sale at microcenter they are like 74 bucks per up to 3 for the 1tb version. Which I make sure to do everytime they are on sale
