Displayport to VGA display not being recognized by Windows

Hi. I have a monitor I want to use with my PC, it only takes VGA. I have no VGA ports open on my PC so I got a displayport to vga adapter on Amazon. When I hook it all up Windows can't detect the display. I've tried the different ports on my graphics card, it has 3 but none work. I know the screen works. Maybe the cable is bad, I could exchange it, but before I do that, what else can I try to get Windows to detect it? Is there a way to force it to put out video to the port, even if it doesn't think there is anything plugged in? What else can I do?

Yes, it's 2871 as in the year 2871. I traveled all this way, back in time, just to help you. And you thought your mama lied when she said you were special-_-

What graphics card? It may simply not support display port to VGA if it's old enough

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

So it doesn't detect at all in windows?

You could try to lower your desktop resolution to like 800x600 before connecting it or something.

Yeah it's not showing at all. But when I do Displayport to HDMI then HDMI to VGA, that works.
