A paper, titled “Excessive social media users demonstrate impaired decision making in the Iowa Gambling Task”...published in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions, indicates that people who use social media sites heavily actually display some of the behavioral hallmarks of someone addicted to cocaine or heroin. The study asked 71 participants to first rate their own Facebook  usage, then went on to complete something called the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), a classic research tool that evaluates impaired decision making. What the researchers found was telling. Study participants who self-reported as excessive Facebook users actually performed worse than their peers on the IGT, frequenting the two “bad” decks that offer immediate gains but ultimate result in losses. That difference in behavior was statistically significant in the latter portion of the IGT, when a participant has had ample time to observe the deck’s patterns and knows which decks present the greatest risk. The IGT has been used to study everything from patients with frontal lobe brain injuries to heroin addicts. Along with deeper, structural research, it’s clear that researchers can apply to social media users much of the existing methodological framework for learning about substance addiction. The study is narrow, but interesting. In an ideal study, the researchers could actually observe participants’ social media usage and sort them into categories of high or low social media usage based on behavior rather than a survey they fill out. Future research could also delve more deeply into excessive users across different social networks. The study only looked at Facebook use. Ultimately, we know that social media is shifting human behavior and potentially its neurological underpinnings, we just don’t know the extent of it — yet.

 

My Thoughts:

As always, correlation doesn't equal causation. Is it the personality that causes this behavior, or the website? Additionally, with such a small sample size additional reach is DEFINITELY needed. Regardless, it's interesting to see these correlations and their comparisons to other unhealthy activities.

unlike drugs. FaceBook can be had for cheap! However when they're hacked the price is x where x is the amount in your bank account.

I live in misery USA. my timezone is central daylight time which is either UTC -5 or -4 because the government hates everyone.

Isn't that backwards? I always assumed bad decision making skills lead to using facebook in the first place.

To be fair you find a sample size of 71 who have frontal lobe injuries and/or addicted to cocaine or heroin. Its a bit tricky.  As long as the sample size is representative  of the total population (i.e. People who make bad decisions on drugs) of that country, you should be fine.

This is the sort of article that is good to keep in the back of the mind.  You never know when further studies start unearthing similar conditions that warrant a closer look/comparison.

It does make some sense considering social media has been specifically designed to exploit human psychology and the easiest way to do that is by exploiting the reward pathway which is also the same pathway that drugs and other addictive behaviors make use of.

Not to defend Facebook, but I feel like this could apply to all platforms of social media. I know some places in Twitter are just as bad as what happens on Facebook in my experience, and Reddit is even worse. We won't mention 4chan here.

I mean... i get what they are trying to say here. There have been times where I have gone down the Facebook rabbit hole and when I finally get off of it, it's like my brain is a bit clouded. Like worn out from the overstimulation info dump from scrolling through tons of different posts in one sitting. Kinda like after an intense physics class or something. And it usually goes away after a few minutes of doing something else. 

 

But to compare it to drugs.... come on clickbait.
