Modem in bridge mode and PPPoE details configured on router. ISP does mac binding for modem. Which MAC will the ISP see?

Basically, I got a new ONT modem. I have a good fibre link but the device MAC isn't registered with the ISP yet, my old ONT's is.

If I put my new ONT in bridge mode, configure PPPoE on the router, and clone the MAC of the old router using the custom MAC option on the router, will I be able to get internet? Or will the ISP still see the MAC of the ONT?

From my understanding of Layer 2 source & destination MAC addresses it'll still look at the MAC of the ONT as the MAC is bound to the port. Bridged mode bypasses Layer 3 functionality I don't think it bypasses Layer 2.

Even if I'm wrong the question begs why is calling the ISP a problem? Should only take a few minutes.

Bridging is basically L1.5, its what makes up a switch. It will pass L2 through the ONT. Your provider will see the MAC of anything behind the ONT like your router.

So basically if I clone the MAC of my old (registered with ISP) ONT, it should connect to the internet as if it's still the old ONT communicating with the WAN, yeah?

Oh you want to replace your ONT with your own.

No it will not work. ONTs are essentially basic managed switches with data being trunked to them. You'd have to setup tagging on the WAN. That's with AE ONTs let alone GPON which usually is a hard no.

Why are you trying to replace your ONT?

Is there a reason why you can’t just call your ISP?

Why did you replace your ONT anyway?
