Transferring os to different drive

Doing s build but my m.2 is gonna take about a week extra cuz it’s delayed.

 

so can I just do windows on a hard drive and then just move it over to the m.2 when it comes? How do I do that?

Yeah, install Windows on the HDD then clone it to the new SSD when it gets here.  Use any cloning software or the one that comes with your SSD.

And then what do I delete to delete the windows on the hdd?

Sure.  You can just format it and then use it as a data storage drive or whatever you want.

What about other stuff I downloaded like games etc? I want to transfer just os over and delete it from the hdd but keep the games etc. Downloaded on there.

Moving just Windows isn't really doable, you need to either clone the drive or install new.

 

I'd install new and then point the library settings to the HDD to find the games.

That's not really possible.

 

What I have done in the past was to clone my Windows drive, but keep my game library on the other drive. It's a bit more involved if your new drive is smaller than the old drive since you'll need a 3rd drive to move your game library to, and then move it back to the drive you want to use.

 

The software I use for cloning is EaseUS todo backup, but it sometimes fucks up the system reserved partition by making it a few GB instead of 500MB.

A clean install is the best thing you can do usually. Install m2s then manually transfer files. Otherwise you will probably have problems.

Yes, you'll have some, unspecified problems, for sure. :) As we all know, copying digital data is like copying VHS - another copy is always worse. :)

 

Jokes aside - image your current system using Macrium Reflect bootable rescue usb, then restore image to new drive drive. And you're but the first person who ask for that on this forum (that will be strange isn't?) so use search option.

Yes, even an year and a half later it's still very easy to use   Has instructions too, easy to follow.

I don't even remember making this thread I must have ended up buying a different ssd or maybe they came back or something as an update lol.
