I have a decision to make on a new graphics card.

I can afford the cheapest 2080 Ti I can find, an EVGA at $1069.  I'm sure this is just base clock speeds, and probably couldn't be OC'ed much.

Or I could get a really high end nice 2080 Super, like an Asus ROG Strix.

Clearly I think if I wanted the most FPS I'd just get the 2080 Ti.   But are there any other considerations here?

I game currently on a 3440x1440 @100Hz, and a Valve Index.    I think the VR is probably the toughest customer here for the graphics card.

Opinions?

I mean, performance wise the cheapest 2080 Ti will sweep the floor with the most expensive 2080 Super.

The GPUs are in completely different leagues.

But with a cheap card, you may be subjected to louder cooling noise, maybe more prone to failure? $1069 is a lot to be spending on a video card, considering a higher end 2080 Ti will only set you back an additional 100$ I'd say why bother cheapening it up when you crossed the 1k barrier... just go all in even if take you another paycheck to get there.

Go for the 2080 Ti,

You can also buy the Gigabyte 2080 Ti GAMING OC with triple fans for a little more ($1129),

I have a 1660 with the same exact cooler,it's very quiet and very cool,

The temperature i get with this cooler without my crazy overclock is 55c on full load max! (and with ambient temperature of 35c)

Hah, you guys are killing me :) Sadly the $1069 IS the "little bit more".

Its not actually a matter of money, it's a matter of wife.  This is all part of a bigger completely new system, with a strict budget of $2000.  I'm cutting it close by even trying to get a 2080 Ti with that kind of budget for a whole machine.   Sure, I could get a better 2080 Ti, but I'd have to sacrifice in some other part of the system, which is honestly pretty skimpy at the moment. I'm still managing a 9700k with it, but any other components are pretty low end.

I would strongly suggest going with AMD cheaper and better performance.

perhaps a 3700x+b450 or x570 board.

I dunno man, where I live I can get a 9700k for $299.  Add a decent fan and we are exactly at the cost of the 3700X with the stock cooler.

From what I’ve seen the 9700k still edges it out in frame rate.

To be clear though, I’d be all over a 3700X if it weren’t for that $299 9700k deal.

Only if your gaming at 720 or 1080. IF you are then forget the 2080ti just go 2080.

Go with the 2080ti.

9700K is the recommended pure gaming CPU.  Grab a 2080 Super/2080 and enjoy it.  You don't need a 2080Ti for 1440p UW.

How about for a Valve Index... I do plenty of Vr too.  Not many people consider the performance requirements for VR, which are usually steeper than the monitor.

Valve Index recommends a 1070 or better, and the 2080/Super is a few tiers above that.

If your gaming at 720 or 1080.  1440 there is almost no difference. But 3700x beats on that 9700k all day long in everything else.

Hes at 1440p. The difference will be maybe around 5fps. And im sure he likes playing at high settings. Play some VR that 8gb on that card is not going to cut it unless you start cranking crap down.  The 2080 is not a good good. I would pay the $200 and just get that EVGA all day long.

So 8GB of RAM is not enough for VR?  Effectively killing anything not a VII, 1080Ti or 2080Ti?

Correct, the 3700X is a great gaming and streaming chip, but the 9700K does eek it out in pure gaming, at any resolution. I'd probably go with the 3700X myself, but if you're not streaming or content stuff.... does it really matter?  Does Chrome/Youtube really kill a non-HT 8-core CPU when running while gaming?

My point is that everyone says AMD for everything else, but I do everything else on my machine short of streaming and I never have any issues.   I think people just recommend AMD just cuz, sometimes.

I don’t fault people for trying to push AMD... it is the new hottness for CPUs.  If I needed lots of cores or did production work, I’d totally get AMD.  I’m pretty much just a gamer at this point so Intel is still a viable option, especially with it being on sale so cheap.  The 3700X might end up costing more due to the cost of a good X570 board.  AMD does offer a bit of future proofing with PCIe 4.0, but by the time that becomes a real issue I would probably be ready to upgrade again anyway.

Good news!  I convinced the wife to up to budget to $2200.  That’s definitely 2080 Ti territory.
