**Update**

Figured out it was most likely a USB port issue. The port I was using was actually a 2.0 rather than a 3.0 as I was originally told. I’ll admit it’s my mistake for not researching more.

Hi All,

I purchased a 2TB WD Elements external hdd around 5-7 years ago just as a backup drive mainly.

Up until last night I have had 0 issues with the drive,  I have recently changed desktop to an Asus ROG GR8 and had the Elements disconnected for a few days while I set up Windows and such.

Last night I plugged it into the system and back into the power socket and got nothing. The light on the back of the enclosure lit up for a split second and then went as dim as it could without being off.

I figured maybe it was the power connection inside the enclosure so I popped it open, took out the hard drive and attached it into another enclosure I have.

I get the sound of it repeatedly trying to spin up but that is all.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this/get the data off?

Thanks in advance,

lgd

IIRC I used EASUS partition manager when it happened to mine to get it working (not in the caddy), and lost the data I had on it, that was backed up elsewhere also thankfully. The drive itself is still going strong 5+ years after the incident.

I'm sorry I can't remember specifics as it was so long ago, but I think I basically just ran a disk check on it and repaired some bad sectors.

Gee so you bought an entry level HDD for backup reasons and expected it to last indefinitely? These things eventually break as any mechanical parts do.

If you had a big need for this backup replacing the driver after the first 3~4 years or at least have bought a higher end HDD was the way to go.

There is a further twist to this story that I never expected.

i tried a WD Blue 2TB drive in the same enclosure I put the green in to test and got an identical result when the enclosure was connected to the GR8.

I then wondered what would happen if I plugged it in internally to my old desktop and low and behold both spin up like nothing ever happened. Full of data and everything.

i am now wondering if it is something to do with the USB ports on the Asus not having enough power or something.
