Diagnostics “halp!”

Why, hello all you excellent human beings!

 

first time in the LTT forums, so I appreciate DMs of any fauxpas I may have committed.

 

I’m hoping this is the right place to post because it seems to be a graphics issue. I am not ruling out a memory issue, but since it’s a “visual issue” and the gpu is still suspect I figured I would try here first?

 

I am attempting to save my 2010 build and keep running into issues, I don’t currently have another video card to swap out nor the money to build a new setup to support it. And I have chased down one issue after another but am stumped on how to search for solutions.

 

my screen is “tearing”, but sometimes it’s more like a visual of minimizing a window that flashes up every once in a while(where you can almost see the desktop or another screen being compressed). It happens wether in a game, browsing, or on desktop. I have tried searching for the issue but can’t seem to find any pictures or videos that replicate it. I have tried it with and without both monitors, and have tried reinstalling drivers, along with a clean uninstall using ddu.

 

If anyone has anything else I can try, or if there is a comprehensive list of “graphics bugs” I can compare to and then search for a diagnostic sequence. Right now I don’t even know keywords to search for this issue.

 

my setup is 

gigabyte 770ta-ud3

phenom II 1055t

gigabyte hd5770

4x4g ddr3 1600 ripjaw(two different models, but they should be paired correctly, I didn’t know to check timing before and I’m running memtest64 now)

 

Diagnostics tried

-furmark stress test, it got to 105c lol, but didn’t seem to climb, stayed at 98% use, and 87% fan? Other than that it doesn’t seem to get above 65, and my issues seem to happen even on desktop.

 

-windows memdiag, 1 error found t4 page issue(don’t know what that means and can’t find it)

 

-memtest64 found zero errors on 4 hour test, ugh...

 

-ddu and fresh reinstall, issue persisted.

 

-single monitor testing, issue persisted and did not lessen.

 

-high and low settings in rust and wow. Runs about the same either way.

In my experience usually screen tearing is either GPU dying a death or a Ram issue.

Yeah, it might be down to that. I was more trying to see if I could find the term for what is actually happening. It’s quite different from textbook “screen tearing”.

 

any ideas of how to diagnose the gpu’s health? It didn’t crash with stress test.

@KeyboardMechanicU could try running a benchmark stress test that tests mainly the GPU.
