Hello, I am a student looking to buy a new and cheap gaming laptop and have my eyes set on 2 specific models, both with just about the same price. However, one has an i7 8750H CPU with a max Q 1070 GPU, whereas the other sports an i7 7700HQ CPU with a max Q 1080 GPU. I will mainly be using my laptop for gaming and for some light student-related work. I am tempted to go for the 1080 however I am scared that the CPU will quickly become completely outdated in a few years, and as I also plan to replace my desktop with this laptop (just hooking it up with my monitor and keyboard really), I am afraid that the 1070 will not suffice for my needs. Both have 16 gb of DDR4 ram and a 512gb SSD (plan to use an exertnal hard drive though).

Better GPU all the way. a 4C/8T CPU is unlikely to become underpowered much sooner than that 1080.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Yeah, better GPU yields better results than better CPU.

All / Any gaming laptop CPU have a good enough performance anyway that you can select with your eyes closed.

1. What models are they

2. Max-Q = bad value almost every single time, considering how they turn each GPU into the model one level lower (1080MQ is barely faster than standard 1070M)

Firstly, what laptop models. A poorly cooled 1080 will perform worse than a 1030. Make sure the laptops don't overheat like many gaming ones do.

Secondly, get an idea of what you want out od the system. The 1080MQ is only as fast as  a 1660 Ti/1070 so you may want to consider a more modern laptop with a 1660 Ti or 2060

I'm talking about the ASUS Zephyrus GX 501 for the 1080 MQ. It's a slim laptop however I haven't seen many cooling complaints, and I plan to buy some laptop fan/stand if those work anyways. It's as I said, mostly for gaming and some light homework. Do you think a 1660Ti or 2060 would be more worth it for the price? I've found the GX 501 for around 1500 USD, looks like a great deal for me.
