I'm going to preface this by stating that any time I say the PC won't power on with the GPU connected I mean nothing powers on. No LEDs, no fans, nothing. The best I get is a very tiny noise from what sounds like the case fans attempting to start before deciding its useless.

I have a 980Ti and I've had it for about 4 years now. It's been under a lot of heavy daily use so it might just be reaching its final hours but I'm not convinced.

I've tried using different PSUs (both 650w), diagnosing ram, diagnosing both PSUs to ensure they're functioning correctly and it still won't power on with the GPU connected.

I tried using my old HD 7850 from 2011 and it boots perfectly with no problems. Obviously that isn't the best thing for rendering/gaming but I'm stuck with it for no.

I've done everything short of trying my GPU in a different computer (I don't have the option and I don't think it'd help at this point), and I haven't tried reflowing but that's going to be the next thing I try if I don't get any suggestions.

I know cards often just die, and this one has seen upwards of 30,000 hours probably, but I'd like to do what I can to get a little more juice out of it before I have the funds to get a new one.

Well you've already done exactly what we would recommend short of trying a different motherboard.

two different power supplies won't run it
and you've confirmed other gpu's work fine

As stated the only thing left to try is another motherboard. But to me it seems something is very wrong with the gpu causing the power supplies to actually short out

Right? The only thing i haven't tried is only connecting one of the power pins because I've heard some people manage to get at least the fans to power on when they do that but I'm afraid I'll fry my motherboard or something lmao.

I'm set to get an RX 5700XT as soon as non-blower models are more widely available. My dad insists there's a way to fix it by "replacing a capacitor" like he's done on TVs in the past but he doesn't understand that the card is probably dead and it'd be cost prohibitive to try and repair it at this point.

If I can find some thermal paste I'll try to reflow it to maybe get a few more weeks out of it but I'm already in talks with churches and morticians regardless.

Thanks for the help.

no that'll be fine to only connect a single pin , however the two connectors on the card are linked in paralell with each other and go to the same place so if one connector itself has a short it'll still affect the gpu

an offshoot suggestion here but - is the 980 potentially grounding against something now?  When a solder joint is grounded the PC attempts to start up but everything quickly gets shut off at a PSU level (fans click on immediately shut off) - my last ditch attempt would be to try to breadboard the PC perhaps and do everything on a cardboard box so that there is no potential for some grounding.  After that - Id call it a dead (edit) GPU most likely.

Also with NO power connectors the GPU should still act like a Display passthrough with the 75w supplied by the PCIe slot

I actually accidentally powered the PC on once with the GPU in the PCIe slot but with no power connections and it made a loud popping sound ? can't remember if it powered on or not because I immediately turned it off. Had my face in the pc and it scared the heck out of me. Not sure what the popping could've been other than its soul leaving its mortal coil.

I've been running the PC perfectly fine with the 7850. I actually haven't had ANY IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSODs since swapping cards so it might just be its time to go.
