USB ports powered ON after shutdown of the PC !

Go to solution Solved by Inelastic,

It might be a setting called ErP Support. Set that to S5. It's called that on my Asus board.

I recently bought a new motherboard (The Asrock B360M-HDV) to be able to have the i3 8100.
Everything works great with the motherboard, besides one thing thats odd. So basically the USB ports work well, all of them, but i wouldn't be here if there wasn't some sort of issue.

First of all, when i turn off the PC, there are some USB devices that stay powered ON (namely my USB headphones and my USB Wifi Adapter). Before coming here i already checked some forums and most of people said they're issue was fixed after disabling "Turn on fast startup" on the Power options. That doesn't work for me.

The second issue is what's annoying me even more, like i said before i have a USB headphones, the sound part works great, as expected, the microphone part tho ... it has some noise and the voice is barely understandable, it works, but theres like parasite sounds. Thought maybe the headphones are broken or something, i tried them on another PC and they work fine. (I know i shouldnt have bought USB headphones, i didn't know they were USB till i bought them and they worked great till now.)

I've been searching for people to help me, especially for the headphone...i can't afford new ones and they work perfectly on my laptop, and truth is, i actually really like them.

PC Specs :
Motherboard : Asrock B360M-HDV
Processor : i3 8100
Graphics card : Rx 570
No sound cards, just the built in motherboard stuff,
Headphones: Cooler Master Ceres 500

2. Try different ports, sometimes ports directly connected to the CPU works better than those connected some Asmedia chip

this.  its by design.  so you can charge your phone or wireless peripherals while the computer is powered off.

if you dont like it, flip the switch on power supply, that will kill power to the motherboard entirely.

or use the front panel usb instead, this shouldnt supply 5v while powered off

The WiFi adapter i'm using is powered by front panel USB, still powered after shutdown.
That's what i do, i switch the power supply off, switching it daily isn't gonna break it or anything ? switching it on and off every single day ?

Tried different ports, searched in the Bios, found only USB Legacy and some other thing i tried to change options there too but, doesn't change anything ...
I mean Asrock should have made some option to switch that off right ?

I think my board calls it "USB power in S5" something like that, S5 meaning sleep.

Also, there is nothing wrong with USB Pass Thru and having items be powered on all the time.  I love that my headphones charge overnight after I use them, they're always 100%, ready for use.

Same with my phone charging cable.

I'm curious what the issue is you're not liking about it, vs shutting your PC off by the PSU switch after powering down every time.

When you tested them on another PC... were both circumstances the same?  Wireless or wired?

Being powered on all the time won't cause these issues.  It's just being ON.  You have other sources of interferences it sounds like.

Yes the circumstances were the same, wired, but it's a laptop, but before i change my motherboard, my old motherboard (which is a H81M-P33 by MSI) worked well ! never had this issue.
But as you say it's not linked to the USB being powered ON or not i guess yes. Thank you for clarifying !

as long as you dont flip it off until after the computer has powered itself down, then it wont cause any issues at all

This can actually cause damage to your PSU. Every time you turn the PSU off the primary capacitors discharge. As you turn it back on there is a rush of high current as the capacitors try to charge. This can damage a PSU over time, and in some cases even cause house breakers to trip if the current spike is high enough. You can also wear out the switch itself.

Best thing to do is to leave the PSU switched on. While the system is off but the PSU is switched on it will switch to 5VSB mode to keep the capacitors charged and to provide power to USB devices if the motherboard is configured to allow it.

Looks like you've already found it, but there is an option in most motherboard BIOS to disable USB power while in standby.

Thank you for these informations (i was pretty sure it's bad to turn off the powersupply over time thats why i was so worried, i don't mind switching off the power supply) Yes i found the solution thanks to all of you :3 ! have a nice day !
Will try to figure out the microphone issue.
