Hey guys!

So recently I built a new PC (one month ago) and about a week ago, while  gaming and recording(Playing Rainbow six Siege,) my PC shut down due to overheating. At first I thought it was a one off, however this consistently occurred after only few minutes of entering the game and clicking the record button. This all had happened so suddenly as I have previously had no issue with recording and playing Rainbow Six. A few days later I began to edit and render some video. While exporting the video (done in Premiere Pro) my PC reached 93c. I know that the max temp for my CPU is 95c so i would really want to stay away from these high temps.

My PC also Idles at around 48C

I`m beginning to think that the CPU cooler is the problem, I have a RaijintekThemis Black CPU Cooler for Ryzen at this moment in time. I am wanting to upgrade to the Cryorig H7. However I would like to know if the bracket for the Raijintek is the same for the H7 (as my case makes it impossible to install a new bracket and i would not want to remove all my PC parts just to add a new cooler)

My current PC specs are:
AMD Ryzen 7 2700

Gigabyte Radeon Vega 64

Corsair Vengeance 2 x 8GB

TUF B450-PLUS GAMING Motherboard.

if anyone could let me know if the cooler bracket is the same, or if the CPU cooler isn't the problem, then that would be greatly appreciated

Ok, when remounting will I need to re-apply the thermal paste?

third party paste isnt necessary, it helps but the pre applied paste on the cooler should be fine.
you shouldnt be hitting 95C with the pre applied paste.

if ur pc is only in use for a month u dont have to reapply paste, but it is recommended.
If you have paste just do it to be sure.

make sure to look at the spread of the previous paste, maybe u didnt apply enough/ too much. Maybe all the paste spread to one side of the cpu.

keep us updated

I am here to learn, please correct me if im wrong or you see me putting bs on your screen!

True - but if he's remounting the cooler, might as well get high end paste.

Instead of just remounting should I just upgrade the cooler?. Is the bracket same? Im guessing it should be since they both work on the AM4 chipset

When choosing the cooler I had very little money left in my budget so i kinda just cheaped out and chose the Raijintek, however now i have some more more money and have seen that the H7 is a very good cooler.

can u link the specific cooler u have and which one u want to buy, the H7 one.
Also what would be your budget for an upgrade?

Its def not necessary tho, even the stock cooler on the 2700 can keep it under 90.

This is the cooler I have currently https://www.overclockers.co.uk/raijintek-themis-black-heatpipe-cpu-cooler-pwm-120mm-hs-015-rt.html#tech_specs

This is the cooler I would like to buy https://www.cclonline.com/product/225934/CR-H7A/CPU-Coolers/Cryorig-H7-Single-Tower-Heatsink-with-120mm-Fan/CLR1378/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwwIPrBRCJARIsAFlVT89Tnt51EU5fFH_8me5-9LQenvfkqY8RgPDqXF-qsGFqDgV4DFipt6AaAjDYEALw_wcB

My budget would be around £40-£50

That cooler isnt that much of an upgrade. still the same amount of heatpipes.
The cooler u have right know should be good enough to cool ur cpu.

as i said, even the stock cooler is good enough to keep it under 90.

I dont really know a lot about these budget coolers, to be honest, there are hundreds of them. you cant know em all.

Ok, so my best bet is to remount the cooler? and because my PC is relatively new I wont need to re-apply the paste?

btw thanks for all this help!

if you have the paste at home, i would re apply.

if you dont reapply , only take the cooler of for max a couple mins, you dont want to leave the paste in open air too long.

Hey, so after a bit of research I found that this sudden increase in temperature maybe down to malware, after a full system scan potential threats were removed and now my PC is idling at around 43-44C which is a huge improvement as today the idle temps had increased to 56C. I will continue to monitor the temps and if they return to the high temps I will remount the cooler.

however I just wanted to say a big thank you for taking the time to offer me some advice!, I hope you have a great day!

Unless you have very high ambient temps that idle temp is very high.
