If it doesn't have an nvme or m.2 slot to begin with, chances are it won't support booting from an m.2/nvme slot on a pcie card.

It would be for extra storage only.

Some older motherboards can boot from pcie and will just treat it as a pcie drive though, so look into what your motherboard manufacturer states about your specific motherboard.

thanks!

There are also other ways to boot nvme drives I use adapters like that on my non-UEFI X58 boards, one of them boots via a usb drive using DUET. DUET and Clover are often used to boot them on older hardware. Sometimes you can also patch support into your bios depending on your motherboard. The Samsung 950 Pro's and some SM951's along with the Plextor M8PeY also support booting via AHCI but those are all quite a bit older now and people know they demand a premium.

It'll still work either way out of the box as a storage device, if you are wanting to for instance not buy new sata drives because in the future you plan to only use m.2. The 1TB 660p as a pure storage device would be a great buy. I use my old SM951 that has an AHCI part number but physically is nvme only in my X58 home server, it boots into FreeNAS via USB and simply uses that for all of my services, jails, vms, ect. All I did was shutdown, pop it in and format.

Be aware that some of the pci-e 4x cards have i/o indicator leds, many of the cheaper ones. Usually they're green pcb and are more intended for like a server thus have the low height to fit in like a 1u/2u rack mount case. I made that mistake with one and decided I'd just knock the LED off with a screw driver since it was a spare parts home server and the adapter and SM951 cost me about $15 out of pocket for both. It worked and it's no longer a green flashing Christmas themed box in the corner with red led case fans, you probably shouldn't do that though.
