I study computer science and I'm searching for a new laptop.

I live in Germany.

Requirements:

  • Enough power for anything programming including some machine learning
  • 13.3 - 14" Display - 1080p is enough
  • Moderately Slim and portable
  • RAM configuration of minimum 8gb
  • Upgradeable RAM and storage
  • Can handle CAD with Fusion360
  • Decent keyboard
  • Thunderbolt would be nice but not strictly necessary
  • USB C charging would be nice
  • Preferably as cheap as possible but at max up to around 1000€
  • No gaming, so probably no external gpu needed
  • Battery life for normal workloads of around 4-5 hours minimum

I'm especially interested if you'd advice to search for an i7 8th gen or if an i5-8265U should be good enough for some years.

My last laptop years ago had an i5-3210m and it often bothered me.

Some laptops I looked at already:

  • Lenovo Thinkbook 13s
  • Schenker Slim 14 L18 with i7  (same as Clevo N141ZU)
  • Lenovo ThinkPad L390
  • Some zenbook variants

For programming, more cores are more useful then then single core performance, so AMD will be a better option then intel.

CAD with Fusion360

Just about any CPU can handle that. I run it with my core2 duo. With fusion, graphics is more important then CPU, but is perfectly smooth with the integrated graphics of an AMD A series CPU.

Upgradeable RAM and storage

If there is lots of RAM and good storage in the first place, you won't need to upgrade it. Especially if you want Solid state storage, it may cost you a lot later and you will have 1 SSD just lying around (unless you are planning to sell it)

Since you have the budget, I would go for business grade laptops

Fine without TB3?

Get a business laptop for sure. Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude or HP EliteBook. They are Far more durable and reliable than the cheapo commodity trash. An L480/490 or T480/490 would be my pick

To be honest I'm just not a huge fan of the design for most thinkpads. I want something fairly thin and light I can use on the train without looking too much like a business /sysadmin type of guy.

I'd be fine without TB3 if it's the thing driving the price up. Anything coming close to around 800-1000€ should have TB3.

@Faisal A

but there aren't that many good ultrabooks in that range with amd CPUs by most manufactures. Only some hp books.

If amd mobile CPUs would already be zen 2 it'd probably be a no brainer cause cheaper and more powerful but zen+ mobile does not seem that great especially concerning battery life.

I'd like upgradeability cause I don't have the budget yet for 500gb or a terabyte of ssd or 16gb ram but prices will go down further especially for ssds. Also you can often buy cheaper ssd storage than the price manufacturers charge for the same storage.

So you want that is easy to damage and break?

It's a laptop not a boomerang.

I've used a lenovo ideapad Y580 for years and it has never broken. Thinkpads are also from lenovo. I don't think there's such a huge difference in build quality between their Thinkpads and the rest.

You're quite wrong. There is a MASSIVE difference. If you drop a modern Ideapad, it's fucked. If you drop a ThinkPad, Its fine. If you spill water on a commodity laptop, it's dead. If you spill water on a business laptop, it's fine cause it has a system in place to protect the electrical Componenta and drain the liquid. If you get sand or salt or dirt on a regular laptop, it will start having issues with the fans and draft hrat

If you do that to a ThinkPad, it's fine.

Okay whatever I don't want to argue and honestly don't know much about this.

So if reliability isn't a concern for me. Would you have other suggestions for me except for thinkpads?

Hmmm, how about an EliteBook 745 G5? Or a Surface Laptop 2? The Zen Book UM431 is also very good with long battery life and performance.

They are quite portable, and you can opt for silver finish for more modern design

Will get back to you ASAP, I'm busy rn

Actually most of them have comparable battery life compared to their Intel counterparts

There is difference between business grade and consumer grade

It should be a concern. You don't want the laptop to have issues after purchasing/a few months usage

Lenovo Thinkpad L390 Yoga, L390, L490

Dell Latitude 5400, 5490

From Lenovo edu store:

Lenovo Thinkpad T490 20N3S02J00: slightly over budget

Lenovo Thinkpad T495 20NKS01Y00

(and many)

The EliteBook seems to only be sold with last gen Ryzen CPUs as far as I can see.

Surface Laptop 2 is out of my budget for most configurations.

Doesn't really matter - Kaby Lake R/Whiskey Lake/Ryzen Mobile/Ryzen+ Mobile are all pretty similar.

Those are interesting but I'm still not 100% in on Thinkpads for me as a student. I got a Thinpad E495 for work so I'll see how I like that.

Probably over budget on the T-Series as I don't need the business features but something with an i7 from lenovo in the edu store definitely looks like an option.

I said I could spend up to around 1000€ but I definately would prefer saving 100 or 200€ and only paying like 800€

I'm also questioning wether I should look out for the release of the Ice-Lake U series of Intel (as Zen 2 mobile is not due until 2020)
