HELP! Budget $150 PC Build

Hello there, 

 

My son wants to get into PC gaming and asked me to build a PC for him. My budget is $150. Used parts are fine and I live in Toronto. Which parts should I choose? I have no idea what parts to pick, lol!

 

Any help is appreciated!

$150 is quite low, but I think we can make something work!

 

Track down an Optiplex 3010 Mini Tower on your local reselling site, I'm not sure if you have Craigslist in Canada, and spend the rest of your money on a GPU. 1050Ti is usually the go to. Don't even waste your time trying to buy new parts, as it won't work out.

Get something used, and try to find a GPU.

I mean, what games are we talking about here? The easiest thing to do at that price point is find a mini-tower Optiplex 790 and add a GTX 750 Ti, 1050 or GT 1030. The issue is that Opti 790 prices are still stupidly unpredictable, and you might be able to land a steal with an i5-2400, a 500GB hard drive and 8GB of RAM locally for $50. You're more likely to run into idiots selling their Opti 790, complete with its i3-2120, 4GB of RAM and no storage whatsoever, for $250.

 

Your only option, really, is to troll local ads, find a suitable prebuilt (Sandy Bridge i5 or better, 8GB of RAM, 500GB HDD or greater), lowball the hell out of the owner then spend whatever's left on a GPU.

Raise your budget to $450 or don't even waste your time, don't even try because your son would be very disappointed.

The games he will be playing are Apex Legends, Fortnite and Rainbow 6 Siege. $300 is probably the better option. I just wanted to see what $150 would do.

I would get used PS4 or something like that.

Do not put one stick of RAM into a system that uses an APU for graphics.

Do not go for a 1050Ti. This will perform the same if not better and is cheaper than even a 1050 non-TI and it has RGB for that extra performance.

Thanks guys for the help! I was looking through used parts on Kijiji and found some awesome deals for a $300 pc build!

 

CPU - Ryzen 5 2600 - $80

Motherboard - MSI B450 Gaming PLUS - $40

RAM - 16 GB DDR4 2666 MHz- $40 (I know its not the fastest RAM, but it should work fine on the Ryzen platform)

GPU - Zotac GTX 1060 3 GB OC - $80 (Am going to overclock it for better performance)

HDD - 500 GB - $10 (Do not know exact model)

Case - NZXT Phantom 410 - $10 (ATX case)

PSU - 500 W Corsair - $20 

 

Total Price: $280

 

I'm pretty sure this is a great 1080p max setting gaming/streaming PC!
