Google has been having a rough few years. June 2018, its big government contract for Project Maven was scrapped. November, employees walked out in protest over allegations of sexual misconduct. This July, after employees pushed back against a censored version of Google Search. All those issues were rooted in Google's culture, according to a massive new investigation by Wired. "You need these aberrant geniuses because they're the ones that drive, in most cases, the product excellence," Schmidt told Wired in an interview earlier this year. The products in reference here are some of Google's best — products used by billions of people worldwide, such as Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Translate. They're also tremendously important pieces of Google's business. And that's why Schmidt's statement about aberrant geniuses being allowed more rope than other employees is so important. The same cultural standard within Google that encourages frank, open dissent — when paired with Google's famously open internal communications — has also pushed employees into political arguments that have divided the company. Several conservative former Google employees are suing the company, accusing Google of censoring their political speech and firing them. President Donald Trump has begun targeting Google and CEO Sundar Pichai in recent weeks. Trump said Pichai was being watched "very closely," and he has accused Pichai of groveling for favor from him in a meeting. But that's far from the end of Google's recent problems.

 

My Thoughts:

Google has always been a mixing pot. Unlike some companies were politics, sexuality, and other tough conversations are discouraged or prohibited, Google promotes engaging in those conversations. Recently, those conversations have gotten dirty with employees on both sides of the spectrum leaking information about other employees leading to doxxing and harassment, among other things. Additionally, certain parts of Google/Alphabet have been focused more on profit than their previous guideline of "Don't be evil" stirring up more internal and external controversy as Google attempts to catch up to it's more ethically questionable tech rivals.

Though, as a practical matter, the really important Google products they listed in the quoted piece are all very "old" at this point. That's actually been Google's biggest problem for nearly a decade: they are just finding more ways to monetize things. The company is no longer in a market where they're exploring new things, thus they are fighting over internal sources of power & money. Frankly, it's the life cycle of any Empire. When they put it in there they were still a relatively small tech upstart, and I absolutely think it was meant at face value. They looked at big companies being dicks to their customers/users, and didnt want to be the same way. 

 

The fact that they fell so far that they not only violated that rule, but did it to such a degree that they felt the need to edit it out of their policy is very telling of where their corporate structure is at.

It's not just Google, it's happening across Silicon Valley.

 

My mother works for a county a hospital (not gonna say the name) and top executives are just bailing left and right. It's gotten so political that people have forgotten that at the end of the day, this hospital is still a business. Despite all of its write offs and government subsidies, there is a lot of fraudulent behavior happening due to political standing about immigration and whatnot that is hurting this hospital. The people being replaced are incompetent and are only being hired for political reasons too. It's a sinking ship and very sad to see this type of behavior being practiced.

 

Anyway, I hope Silicon Valley has a reset. Too many dumb people playing dumb politics.

I'm curious about which rivals you're referring to here. Off the top of my head, I'm struggling to come up with many companies that Google could be considered to be trying to catch up with, and none that I would consider ethically questionable.

Dear Google, any successful group of people is a hierarchy, not a round table. 

 

People are always too different to be able to have equal say in anything and expect the whole to move forward.  This is why you only have one CEO, one president or prime minister, one king or queen  and one chairperson.   If you don't believe me ask yourself why any army has a very rigid and well enforced hierarchy of control.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

I'm always amused by the people who shout "screw you Apple!" over labor conditions, and then rush to use a Windows PC made in similar conditions, an Xbox made in similar conditions, an Android phone made in similar conditions... it's really just a thinly-veiled attempt to tie their irrational hatred of Apple to a sense of moral superiority.

 

As for Google, I'm not sure this division is reflected in the company's actual performance.  Alphabet (and Google specifically) is doing just fine monetarily.  There'll only be a broader concern if any internal turmoil actually starts hurting the company's overall health.

It was mainly a slight against the user in question for using the term "conmenservatives". Pointing out the complete hypocrisy of his belief system.

"Google's openness to dissent " considering the whole demore incident they don't seem to be open at all, they have that policy but its just the skeleton of a deadman.

they having large problems inside right now is justified i would be more horrified if there weren't (which is what i thought), good to see some still use their heads/ have consciences

With such conflict inside the company it isn't about them doing fine monetarily, but i'm not surprised they're having problems when the higher ups are forcing their political ideas on everyone. If companies were forced to act as platforms and not publishers then maybe there would be less internal problems.
