Phishing attacks are designed to exploit how the brain works says Google and MIT

Working within IT for years now, I have always had the suspicion that there are certain types of people who will just fall for phishing attacks because of what kind of person they are and how their personality is.

 

According to this article MIT says that Phishing works because:

“We are all susceptible to phishing because phishing tricks the way our brain makes decisions,” Daniela Oliveira, an associate professor at the University of Florida, said on August 7 at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas.

The article goes a little deeper than just saying something like gullible people or Apple users just fall for Phishing more often. As "stress hormone, increases vigilance and makes detecting a deception more likely." Also, emotions of sympathy can also be used to trick people to replying.

 

Given Google is involved I'm not fully not convinced that this piece was published to promote some Google thing being sold like their USB key, and IMHO YubiKey or anyone else is much more trustworthy than Google's stuff.

IMO it's a bit of both. I know people who fall for phishing constantly, because under stress, their ability to reason/logically make decisions just melts away. Lots of scammers/phishers push people to stress out. Though I agree a lot more use the other method, or getting people overly relaxed (confidence tricksters).

This isn’t new at all. A study was done in the 1990s about this. It’s what started the whole thing about people eating spiders in their sleep. It’s completely made up and was done to show people will believe anything on the internet

The article goes a little deeper than just saying something like gullible people or Apple users just fall for Phishing more often. As "stress hormone, increases vigilance and makes detecting a deception more likely." Also, emotions of sympathy can also be used to trick people to replying.

 

Given Google is involved I'm not fully not convinced that this piece was published to promote some Google thing being sold like their USB key, and IMHO YubiKey or anyone else is much more trustworthy than Google's stuff.

So what they are saying is true. Most phishing attempts play on a since of urgency to receive something you might value. Where as a spear phish might play on spoofing a contact you know and being very targeted to the point you cannot tell the difference easily.

 

Then you have all of the other phish that are very successful due to the departments they target. Phish with PDF's named resume going to HR employees or labeled receipts going to billing. These are all items that work day in and day out. That is part of the reason less and less companies let you email HR a resume directly and instead direct you to their portals.

 

The ultimate truth is that your end users will always be your biggest risk. That is why constant training and coaching is so important. A company can literally invest 50% of what they make into cyber defense and lock down everything, but all it takes is one user to get you breached.

Amusingly, I got an obvious scam call today. Apparently, I had an unused coupon for a major giveaway that occurred last year. I said "Oh, is it for my toaster? I'd been waiting all year for it." Guy hung up. 

 

Just when I thought I'd have met someone interesting to talk to. :(
