LTT Official Folding Month 2019!!!

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Alright guys, the time for locking this thread has come, can you all please use the Folding Community Board for all further talk.

Thank you all again for participating in the event.

Once the sheet is cleaned up I will edit this post to add the link to the spreadsheet.

@TVwazhere Can you please lock this thread for me.

So VNC knows nothing about the GPUs which makes sense as it’s Xserver would run on a virtual GPU.

If your willing to potentially break the VNC and to have to use an SSH session to manage the VM then you could generate an xorg.conf file using the command referenced above but you may or may not have an X Display Manager installed depending on which options we’re selected on install.

Yea, i proberly not have it, as i selected to have a minimal install.

It is already running 1935MHz, so it will proberly not make that much of a difference the last 70MHz. so i guess i will not do anything, because it is this difficult to do so.

1935 is pretty good if it’s boosting there at stock. Likely a couple of hours downtime to get it working might not cover the increase in points over the next couple of days

Yes apparently it is boosting there at stock in linux..

In windows it is more like 1890MHz, so it is quite good.

I have no idea of the memory frequency though, but since it is in P2 state, it might be downclocked a little.

Memory Frequency doesn't do too much in Folding. Folding makes very little use of the VRAM

Well guys, the ranks are up.

I just want to give my apologises for the lack-luster updates this year, I'm sure many of the veterans can agree with me that last years were of much higher quality. I really do appreciate you all sticking with us on this and pushing so hard during the event, and I hope to see you all continuing to fold further after the event so we can show the world just what team LTT can do.

P.S. I should add this to the actual update...

Yep.  That sounds like fighting words.  I plan to keep going till I hit over 100mil in total.  And, even then I will probably leave two GPUs up for the rest of the year, since Fall weather has finally shown up!   Woooooo, mid 70 Fs temps, finally!  Now, my computers can be my heaters for the townhouse.

That if the power going out once and awhile since yesterday would stop.

To be fair, I'll be dropping my production considerably once we hit our end date to free up my hardware for gaming and some video work I wanted to play around with. I do plan on maintaining some occasional folding when I do light tasks light web browsing and video consumption though.

I'm mostly going to let my 2nd rig crunch (whole reason I built it originally years back).  The main one after the event will just do folding at night or when I am at work.

Though, after this event.  I need to throw some BOINC GPU projects at the main rig.  Need to spit some more points out over there.  Along with throwing the CPU back at LHC@Home ATLAS WUs.  F@H and that BOINC project tend to not play nice together, so I put crunching that one on hold at the moment.  Basically just have the main rig CPU doing Universe and WorldCommunityGrid on the side currently.

Quick question: how do I see PPD in Linux? Got a cherry server set up but want to see what 24 cores can do (I didn't get a GPU as I am a poor man). And can I connect it to HFM? Which port would it be?

I’ll be dialling things back a bit.

Have to release one system to youngest kid so they can start gaming on it.

Run Windows Update on my Daily Driver

Repaste the 1060 that’s going to the kid and my 1070Ti

And I’ll probably set a few systems up to adjust power limits based on time-of-day hydro rates.

Then there’s this idea I’ve been mulling over for reusing some of the existing hardware for a new gaming rig.

I’ll likely move all my excess threads back to World Community Grid and probably a couple of GPUs to Einstein@Home

Oh yeah, clean the dust filters again.

yes, tcp 36330 but you may have to open it on the Firewall which will vary depending on the Distro and hosting provider.  See Metallus’ topics

I have been running F@H pretty much 24/7 for the period of this month. I had my wedding preparations so i could afford to let the rig fold while i was doing some IRL stuff. Now i am flying for my honeymoon so it will fold about one week more. The competition is awsome and i have to thank @GOTSpectrum for constant updates :) I may drop from top100 but nonetheless I am glad that my PC could do something grater than just play streams or play games. Big thank you for all the competitors and organizers :)

and of course when everything has been going according to the plans, something had to break. Last night one of the gpus decided to boost to higher than adequate clocks and locked the driver. Disabling it in windows and enabling back again and I had to reboot the system. However I noticed that only today, almost in the evening, so it's been folding 2 projects at the same time on 1 gpu instead of 2 on 2. Which stalled the performance out to non-existent 800k ppd. Instead of 2.4m for 18 hours or so. fml

I just made some crude calculations on my power estimate for this event.

I calculated that my total power ussage will end up at about 750KWh !

Translated to gold, that is about $300US. but because i started folding earlier full time in september, the power bill will nearly be $400US. for this folding thing!.

Because i pay my power bill every 3 month, the total powerbill will be higher, i am expecting to have used 1300KWh over the past 3 month which is about $500US, or maybe a little more. Because prices is somewhat difficult to translate to other currencies, i can compare with prices to different graphics cards.

So this event have costed me about one GTX 1660. and including the warmup, about a GTX 1660TI, and the whole three month, it have costed me about an RTX 2060Super....

Time to sell my RTX 2060, i guess.

But how much did you save on heating? ?

I'm running at 2.9kW at $0.09Cdn/kWh or $219.24Cdn or $167.43 "Freedom Dollars" and I haven't had to turn my Natural Gas furnace on so I've saved probably $30Cdn in Gas so $144.52US

I was able to extend out an extra couple weeks on low oil use before filling, thanks to computer heating helping maintain temperatures for me, especially on overnights when we didn't get down below freezing at night.  At the current cost of electricity, I estimate I probably spent an extra 40-50 freedom bucks on electric for the next bill (most of my systems run 24/7 anyway, just not under full load), and saved probably 30 or so worth of heating oil.  Unfortunately, weather and new baby have kept me off of the roof to finish the solar install…which is time crunching now, because I need it done and operational before the end of the year for the largest tax credits.
