Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Alright guys, the time for locking this thread has come, can you all please use the Folding Community Board for all further talk.

Thank you all again for participating in the event.

Once the sheet is cleaned up I will edit this post to add the link to the spreadsheet.

while this is true, what about today? nothin' wrong with folding outside the event. also, thermal issues as in CPU is hitting 75C (not actively folding) and GPU is hitting 70C with max fan speed (folding)

Holy jeebus, why does everybody have so much extra insane hardware?

This was the result of being so short-staffed last year that I was working 80 hours a week or more. I ended up with so much extra cash I said screw it and built a PC. Now I look at this crazy thing I built, and I think "yeah, I deserve this."

And now folding month is coming up, so I can use it to give back! Roommate said yes!

Yep.  But to maintain it, we will need to do an overtake of the next team to hold off a hard charging team coming up the ranks fast.

Well, guess the APU's GPU is just gonna sit there still.  Nothing I do makes F@H want to work with it.  Always says no valid GPU when trying to add a GPU slot, even after what appears to be successful AMD driver and OpenCL and Vulcan installs.  ?

Ubuntu 18.4 LTS on Ryzen 2400G

I tried to get my RX 480 to work with F@H on my MX Linux install. It did show up in clinfo, but F@H client did not detect it. In Mint I had same results. I did test with old Quadro card, that worked after installing drivers. So I decided to buy a another GPU, upgrade to team green. Still waiting for the new card, should be here by tomorrow.

In case someone as crazy as me is going to fold on laptop and gets constant 85+° C on CPU/GPU or noise. Here are some solutions for you:

CPU:

1) If you run Intel Core 4th gen and higher, try to do undervolting via Intel XTU. That can help lower temps drastically (and maybe lessen thermal throttling);

Other possible software to use: ThrottleStop, Ryzen Master (if you're on Ryzen);

2) (Requires administrator rights) Go to control panel -> Power options. You can either create a new profile or prepare the one that is activated via additional software like Dragon Center from MSI (at least in my case, your mileage may vary). Go to Power Profile settings, (I decided to edit Balanced, since in that mode GPU doesn't go too high frequency-wise to lessen power draw) and "Change additional settings". Look for CPU power delivery control (or something like that). That will show 3 additional settings, we need the last one (that says "Maximum percentage" or sort of). Change both settings from 100% to 98%. That way your CPU won't do any sort of Turbo Boost at all, which will allow you to do folding within recommended thermals and lowered fan speeds.

You could try turning off Turbo Boost in your BIOS (if you have that option), but that would require restart each time you want to turn on/off TB. So, let's just say, the "power mode" method is somewhat better in terms of hussle...

GPU:

1) Use AMD CCC (if you're on AMD) or Nvidia Inspector (if you're on NVidia) to lower frequency. Or something else like MSI Afterburner or EVGA Presicion XOC. Just make sure that there's only one program that tells your PC which frequency to go to or, at least, that those programs are synced (in my case it's Dragon Center, if I try to use something else, they will conflict, and nobody wants that because your GPU will switch frequency like a crazy with voices in his head which might lead to problems with sudden voltage drops and bumps, overheat, or, the best case scenario, not using your GPU's full potential on this workload);

2) Use "Balanced" power profile. That can drop frequency, too (by going to lower power state), and thus, lowering temps.

Common sense:

1) Change Thermal paste to something better like MX-4. That alone can improve cooling efficiency (and potentially lower temps even more);

2) Clean your cooling system (obviously);

3) Try to use something that will sit under your laptop. That will allow your laptop to breathe easier and use more of cold air (the way it's useful on ROG Zephyrus makes it relatable to all laptops, although, you don't need to open your laptop, but you can, and if so, do it carefully by making sure nothing falls off or messes with cooling in bad ways, at your own risk and make sure you are ok with potentially losing warranty). That shouldn't be something like Cooling Pad, It just has to be sturdy enough and shouldn't create any additional heat.

4) Try to create some space where there will be as little restraints for hot air as possible. Even better solution - something that allows cold air to easily go to laptop (like another fan or draft).

5) (Kudos to @palespartan for giving idea for this remark.) If you can, you might want to put laptop in position with even less restrictions to airflow. Aka Vertical position, with vents that suck air in facing absolutely nothing and pointing at one of the farthest walls, while cooling vents that are used to throw away heated air do so to the sides or (even better) just up (where warm air goes on it's own usually).

6) There is a remark to this remark, though... If you have cooling vents on the keyboard side of laptop (as most of recent laptops do), you don't want to close the lid, otherwise you'll just create another obstacle for cold air that could go through it. If you don't have cooling vents, however, you can set up your OS to do nothing when lid closes, which will help you not get distracted by any light while you're sleeping (and potentially lessen fan volume for those who sleep on the other side of the wall).

7) (Thanks to @Spotty and @palespartanfor reminding about this.) Make sure that folding stops when DC Power is not plugged into your laptop. That can be turned on via "Configure" window.

Similar things can be done to PC, too. And you might notice that a lot of steps are similar to what cryptocoin miners are doing (because basic process is the same). So you can also try some tricks that miners use if you want to create a farm (they are basically the same as coin mining farms).

Good luck with folding, everyone!) And remember...
