1950X vs 2920X Which To Buy?

I am shopping for a Threadripper CPU without hitting the $1000 price bracket. I am looking for feedback since there is a sale going on.

This is not an upgrade from a previous TR4 build, this is a new build.

I find them both hard to justify, 2920x more so.

I already have the X399 MB and evrything except the CPU, that why I am asking for a feedback

Zen+ only gives about 10% per core performance increase maxed out, so 1950x if you ask me regardless of workload.

games / clock-favouring work: 2920X

strictly multithreaded work (do the research here) : 1950X

So the 2920X because i will be gaming as well as doing work. and with the price drop, it may be worth getting it for $550 rather than $860

If you wanted to game you should have gone with the R9 3900X, can't you just return the motherboard? you'll be doing yourself a value decision.

 

TR is only for those with true need for the extra pci-e lanes and quad channel memory, not sure if your "working" requires it.

I looked into that CPU, i know its good and its been out of stock everywhere. I will see how my Unity3D and Unreal engine manage on this platform and how it manages rendering.

If you use tools like blender or maya the 1950x, but if this is your only workstation I'd suggest the 3900x or waiting for the 3950x launching in September and returning the mobo.  The 3950x is a 16 core binned zen 2 cpu.  The only benefit of TR at this price poi t is extra pcie crap, storage, more ram, and so on.  The 3950x will cost 750 usd, but will be more ideal for you. 

The PC is a planned build, that means I would have to return 4 of the 8 ram sticks, the motherboard and the water blocks. And pay all those restocking fees.

I picked up a used 1950x for $250 last week, was hard for me to justify the 3900X. Maybe next upgrade/build, I'll go with a 3900/3950

X399 boards still take up a big budget tho unless you also get one used
