At least in Finland both of those need very good reasons to be forced on employees and they both need to be in the work agreement, not when you are being fired. Non-compete clause especially needs to be VERY WELL argued like any normal coder or UI-artist can't have a work that would be so critical for company that they can be forced to sign non-compete clause, even middle management jobs are on the verge to not having really that kind of knowledge as whole that they can be made to sign non-compete clause. Also non-compete clauses are always timed and usually less than 6 months (over 6 months and the company really needs to have some actually strong reasons, we talk reasons like nuclear launch codes or skeleton keys for home alarms level of reasons, just knowing the business and how the company runs and how whatever-their-product-is works can't really be that strong reason). Also non-compete clauses come into play only when the person quits, if fired they don't have effect except in very very rare cases and again they need to be valid in the first place and they need to have extremely good reasons (because most of the stuff that companies think that someone could leak are covered with NDAs which again are in place anywhere from 2-10 years and they really don't need any reasons to be put on).

But what do you guys do using those VPNs? Is it to create Virtual Private Network and share files securely? To omit geo restrictions? To pirate stuff? To protect your data on shitty public Wi-Fi? PIA could keep data of where do you connect to and when, which user was making which connection, but I believe keeping what you transfer is impossible.  What I mean is, PIA never was super secure and it won't be. if you want untraceable connections, tor is probably the best option, but it has many uses even so.

LOL I was scrolling through the news and thought something was wrong with "Internet access" :D I heard only a little of VPNs, read about proxies more, bypassing the geo-blocks is cool...

But reading through this it sounded pretty authentic. Kind of reminded me of Theranos scandal if you've heard of it, here's a good mini series by HBO, worth checking out IMHO. Anyway, the whistleblower that exposed their toxic work environment sounded pretty similar, very personal, very angry. Reading through this anonymous post I did get the feeling there's some authentic anger behind it. Yeah there's little facts presented, but I don't believe someone would point out so many wrongdoings and possibly risk their career just to stir some water... I hope more facts are presented, and where's all the "workers rights" leftist expressing their dissatisfaction???

This isn't a left vs right issue, so please don't be partisan about this topic.

 

So far this is entirely unsubstantiated - none of his supposed colleagues (we're assuming he actually works there, but let's for the moment believe this) are coming forward - even anonymously.

 

He's also claimed straight up that the Owner is lying to every user about not storing any logs or personal data. He said the owner is in fact doing the opposite.

 

Yet he won't back up that claim with any evidence. He keeps saying "I'm waiting for the owner to release the info" - which is stupid, because if the owner was guilty, he's not going to incriminate himself.

 

He very well could be correct. And if further information is revealed that corroborates his story, then we'll know that. But until then, it remains what sounds like a simple disgruntled employee. NDA's and non-compete contracts are pretty standard fare - although if the non-compete is as aggressive as he's making it seem, then that one might not be valid in court.

I probably don't know enough about the technology to comment on the storing logs, as I understand that's a big no-no for VPNs? The part that really caught my eye was about three year and one month plan differences, if you are making more expensive plans better without informing the customer then that's fraud. And something that I don't think would come up just as a fantasy. But overall I agree with your stance, just when such allegations are made I would like to see them in court.

some people get vpns like noping to get better ping for games. sometimes the routing from your computer to the game server is terrible so vpns can actually help with that

It's not so much as a "no no" (since most VPN providers that don't specifically advertise "no logs", likely have logs). It just means that you're not truly anonymous. It also means that if the US Government (or... say, China) demands that the VPN provider turn over the logs, it could contain incriminating evidence against you.

 

The "no log" policy means that when they turn over the log files, there's nothing in them associated with the user, because they never captured those logs to begin with.

 

With that in mind: Any company that operates inside a 5-eyes (or 14-eyes) Alliance nation (5-Eyes is US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand) can essentially put a gag order on the business, and force them to re-enable logs due to "national security" concerns, and you'd never know.

 

This is why many people suggest you get a VPN Provider based out of a neutral third party country.

It would be interesting to see the 3-year vs regular plans differences tested thoroughly. Some people claim that they noticed performance degradation, while others have suggested that their performance on the 3-year plan is just as good as it always was. There are so many variables with VPN Performance that it's not always obvious when the problem is the provider itself.

hmmmz….I couldn’t even imagine how a vpn service (which main task is to provide privacy and security) could leak personal users’ data. The biggest reason why I use a vpn is that I need to provide safe and private connections. So how could you be confident while using a buggy provider which can leak your data to government or smth? (I personally landed on nordvpn, and I’m glad to hear that it’s considered as the most secure vpn)

It's ok for me,  I downloaded a totally free VPN from a Russian website. I don't have to worry about 3rd world working conditions in the UK or the US spying on me...   ?

I believe that was meant to be sarcastic. With people recommending that you get a VPN outside the 5 eyes. With the VPN outside the 5 eyes the US government might not be spying on you but that doesn't mean China, Russia, NK, Iran or your own VPN aren't spying on you.

It's a tricky situation - but generally speaking you'd want to choose a somewhat trustworthy neutral third party that doesn't have any massive military or financial ties to Russia, China, the US, etc.

They will always be someone who will have access to it, but doesnt mean they will or want to.
