What's a good, cheap desktop that can be used as a server?

Go to solution Solved by shuri,

Optiplex

I'm looking for a cheap desktop, it's okay if it's older. But I'm looking for one that would have a decent amount of ram (8gb at least). Dosn't need a GPU I have a space GT710 to throw in it. I'm looking to run Ubuntu server 18.04 LTS and docker/kubernetes clusters (possibly also with Pterodactyl Panel).

I'm looking for a prebuild to repurpose, and It's not gonna run anything super heavy so I don't need ECC, it's just a small personal server. I was looking for the CA $100 range.

Get a refurbished computer from Newegg or eBay

ex 75$ + shipping for Dell Optiplex 790 with i5-2400 , 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD : https://www.newegg.com/dell-optiplex-790-business-desktops-workstations/p/1VK-0001-2JJR7?Item=9SIAAYZ8J73759

Supports up to 16 GB so you can add 4GB or more and maybe change to a SSD if you feel like it.

or 78$ for HP Pro 6300 MT without HDD and OS : https://www.newegg.com/p/1VK-001E-2CWF1?Item=9SIAC0F98Z8932

sounds like a worse deal, but a hdd/ssd is cheap and this also supports 3rd gen Intel chips and up to 32 GB of ram and full height cards and the psu is 320w (vs 240w for the Dell)

I would also suggest looking in the hardware for sale section on WebHostingTalk as people often sell older hardware for cheap, but you're in Canada and most sellers are US and they often won't want to ship just 1 server or they'd prefer to use couriers which will probably cost you 50-100$ in shipping alone.

Anyway here's the section if you want to check out : http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=163

What is your usecase?  You can use pretty much anything sub $100 with 8gb memory for a server. Just wipe it and install CentOS or Ubuntu. Depending on your usecase I'd suggest different drives or networking though.
