Apple also has subcontractor employees listen to Siri recordings. 

Pretty much the same story as the others.  Recordings are being listened to by transcribers to improve the speech recognition and understand dialects etc.

Nice to hear that the recordings are not linked to actual users, although the Google leak clearly showed that such recordings can contain personal information which allows users to be identified.

 

And pretty much like Amazon and Google, they pick up stuff that wasn't intended for the device too.

This was to be expected really.  I figured I'd post it anyway just to show that everyone does it and all of these voice assistants can't be trusted to keep your private conversations actually private.

 

 

 

Update :

 

After Google's announcement that they will temporarily stop listening to recordings made in the EU, Apple has now done the same thing globally and will add an opt-out option via a software update.

I've only ever used Hey Siri for setting alarms, timers, or yelling at it across the room to figure out what the date is. Lol 

 

The rate at which Hey Siri is accidentally triggered has drastically lowered since Apple added the ability to train Siri to activate to your voice. Doing so would mitigate essentially any mic misfires.

Yes. While Apple destroys user meta data in an effort to prevent it being traced back to you, if you say your address or other sensitive details your info could get sent to one of these.

yea doing the same thing with 'hey google' would produce the exact same result but it doesn't stop from others listening into your conversation...

no-ones superior, everyone is a wanker, so just give up, bend over and whore yourself out with your personal and private data cause no matter what, if it's on the internet, it's accessible for everyone to use, no matter what security policy's and systems are put in place, it will get leaked...

i have accepted this and am now selling 1gb of my data for $20 USD, an extra $10 if you want nudes...

That is not stated anywhere. It's just stated that recordings are analyzed. I'd prefer if it was only done in-house by Apple people which would give me some confidence. As soon as shit goes to contractors it's a data leak and abuse hazard.

Same for me. I only use it for basic info and control of the phone. And since my language isn't supported anyway, I use it speaking English. Which kinda screws things a bit if they want to do some sort of profiling.

To elaborate on what Rejzor said: they don't listen 24/7, not even close.

 

All major voice assistants start in a passive mode that only listens for the hotword (such as "Alexa" or "hey Siri") and isn't recording a thing.  The capture only really starts after that, and ends when you've said something.  The catch is that they very occasionally mishear something as the hotword and end up recording snippets of everyday conversation.

 

What's frustrating is that, because many people don't know how smart speakers actually work, there's a lot of misinformation that leads to claims like "they listen to me 24/7."  Always-on recording would be far worse for the companies than the real approach, since they'd end up with gigantic amounts of mostly garbage data (empty homes, incidental sounds...).  They're interested in how well their devices respond to active commands, not the conversation you had while you were watching TV.

No, as in that's literally how it works.  The chipset looks for a waveform match and isn't recording a thing until there's a match.  Remember, in addition to being horribly wasteful, always-on recording would also kill battery life on mobile devices and monopolize your microphone.

Just turn it off. Turning hey Siri, background app refresh, and location services off can give you easily an extra 2 hours of battery

O look the mighty Apple protector of private data has revealed it's true self! But on a more serious note people like to say Apple is more protective of people's data but it really isn't. I mean the fact that it's not even in house people listening to it should tell you something.

Except, this actually DOES show that Apple is more protective of users privacy.  Unlike others, Apple has stripped all the data prior to anything being sent.  While oddities of course can happen, you also have to trigger Siri before anything is sent (which Google also generally does, at least on mobile), unlike with Alexa that has proven to be listening (and recording to Amazon) all the time through court cases pulling recorded audio.

 

I would also point out that Apple gives you a straightforward way to remove any recordings they may have kept.  Straight from their privacy blurb at the toggle switches in settings.  "If you turn off both Siri and Dictation, Apple will delete your User Data, as well as your recent voice input data."  So, if you think you just had a conversation you don't want somebody to know, and siri got enabled somehow (for the love of everything, turn off "Hey Siri"), just toggle those off for a moment, then back on if you're using them, and you're data is no longer at Apple.

Mainly a problem with Alexa around and if FaceBook is open/running someplace.  Google will do some of this if you are currently using them (such as google phone stuff or streaming/uploading on youtube).  Apple doesn't do it at all.

Then again, Apple is still in business of selling devices and their own services. Google is all about making money by advertising shit to you and selling your shopping habits to advertisers. When Apple processes stuff, it's really to enhance the sales of their own product, not someone else's. In this case I'd prefer if it was Apple's own engineers doing it. Where with Google, it's almost better of it's outside people, hopefully listening to same no-context audio snippets. But I think contractors feed info back to Google with context and linking to users given that Google tracks everything on a personal level and even shows that in their own pages where you can see all the recordings yourself.

 

Biggest issue for me with contractors is that they are external people and it's questionable how good their ethical policies are and how much of Apple's privacy policy they obey if any at all.

The platforms are open for anyone to develop for, and decryption means nothing if there's no packets being sent to decrypt.

After Google's announcement that they will temporarily stop listening to recordings made in the EU, Apple has now done the same thing globally and will add an opt-out option via a software update.
