You'll see these top end video cards don't start to bottleneck until they get on PCI-e 1.1 and even then the bottleneck is rather small.

I think overclocking the PCIe would increase speed of the data and not the bandwidth. Although I honestly don't know much about it.

I also tried to overclock my PCIe, however I didn't actually find any option called PCIe Frequency in the BIOS of my Rampage IV Gene LGA 2011 (latest BIOS). All I found was something called PCIe CLK Skew, which I bumped up to +1 then +5 and lastly to +10. There was 0.2 FPS difference between the Unigine Vally runs, which could easily be called tolerance between the different runs. Has anyone tried this on an LGA 2011 board (preferably an ROG one), help me out here guys. :)

I can't find PCIe frequency in my bios.

Is it under any other name?

I see PCI drive strength, BCLK scew, CPU io skew, DMI scew, PLL scew and PCH ClK driving.

I remember asking a similar question when I just got my ROG Crosshair IV Formula mobo back then....and people were saying to not bother with it. If I really wanted to tweak it, just increase by a few (2 or 3) MHz.

If you guys are seeing some interesting results by bringing it up from 100MHz -> 110MHz, I'm willing to give it a go (on my Crosshair V Formula :P ).

The primary risk is that SATA and PCIe are both controlled using this clock speed, if your hard drive can't handle the increase then it'll become corrupted; similarly you could kill anything else in PCIe slots such as network cards etc.

This is very interesting, I do have 3 drives connected up at the moment 1 SDD, 2 HDD's one for storage other is backup. If I had a cheaper solution I'd consider it, but I'd be lost without my 512GB SSD.

 

Although you might be seeing such gains due to the PCIe 2.0 motherboard. Now I was always under the impression it really didn't matter, but maybe with 290(x)/780(ti) it does help with minimums.

Nope, but I'm on LGA 2011, not 1155 so it doesn't really matter. ;)
