What did you do with your Ryzen or Intel stock cooler?

Having spent the $500 for a Ryzen 3900X, and already having a beast Noctua cooler, I am sitting here with this perfectly good Wraith cooler that I have no use for, and had no option to not buy. 

 

So I am curious what other people did with theirs. It feels like a real shame to just throw it away, but what else is to be done with it?

 

If I buy another AM4 chip, it will have one too, and I would want to put a Noctua on it as well. My Noctua is not going to just fail on me (even if it did it could only be the fan, a $20 fix), so I don't need a back up. Do I actually just throw away a perfectly good CPU cooler? I hate being this wasteful but I see no other option. 

 

It has been my biggest frustration with my PC upgrade this year and AMD. Last go around with Intel I got the CPU, and it came by itself, no waste. I do not understand why they are wasting energy and generating needless trash by putting a cooler in every box. Sell the cooler separately, bundle it for free with the CPU, let users select if they want one or not.

i use it as the cooler of my 2700x. It does the job. but that's about it. I had an H55 from my old CPU. but mainly I kept the stock cooler because of the lighting effects. Maybe I swap it out for an new AIO in the future, but I am not sure.

All those stock coolers go right in my box of pc parts.

I got the R5 2600 which came with the Wraith Stealth. I used it for a little bit but I was able to get a Wraith Prism, so I put that on and just put the Stealth back in it's box. Never know when I'll need an AM4 cooler.

Gave it to my brother, so he could use the 95W Wraith instead of the 65W Wraith that came with his CPU.

Improve smartphone cooling during gaming sessions? I've seen sb buy a spare rear shell for their phone, then use thermal pad and glue to get the cooler (Hyper 212 in this case) stuck tight to the rear shell facing outwards.

I've got a box of stock Intel coolers, mostly 775 though so pretty much useless now. Sometimes I use the fans for things, sometimes I do find situations where I need them, often they just sit in a box. They *can* be used for other purposes if you drill holes and tap threads or use thermal epoxy. I've seen them used to cool high power LED's in custom built lights.

I don't know how I ended up with so many stock 775 coolers, I should only have 2 because I've only bought two new 775 CPU's in my life as far as I remember, and yet I have a bin of them. I'm thinking one was with a board I bought. I think that's how I got my 115x coolers too, though I did get one with a copper core from a friend. Those are the best ones, they're much quieter because of an updated fan and fin design. Kept my undervolted i3 4130 silent.

I've bought my last two CPUs tray packed (aka no stock cooler). And will continue to do so if it's option.

i havent bought a oem cpu this way in years, i did it that with my last cpu, i bought it in a store and checked it when i bought it and it was fine, when i got home, it came with a bent pin, not that hard to bend it back and not sure how it got bent

 

weird enough they gave me the heatsink it should have come with in a cardboard box made for this purpose, not the retail box, i was sure that oem cpus didnt came with a heatsink these days

Sounds more like you have bought used than retail. Both of mine, E8400 and 4770K came in sealed packages, and from known retailers.

not used or second hand, no, it was oem, tray cpus, they seem to buy them by the hundreds, are units meant to be used by system integrators, not sold per unit so they dont have boxes for the cpu

 

perhaps you never bought a oem cpu on a tray, it looks like this

 

 

for some reason they had the right heatsink for it on a oem box

 

i bought it because it is cheaper and it came without the heatsink that i dont need, i have a cooler master tx3 evo

 

is not a great cooler, but uses the old mounting system from the old amd cpus and is quiet, something most stock coolers dont offer

I put it back in the box.  If my cooler dies, I have a spare.  I'm planning to sell my CPU when I upgrade it at the end of the summer.  I can sell it with the cooler at that time.

Anyone see OEM cooling solutions? Some of them are pretty cool and go beyond just a hunk of finned aluminum. Some Core2 era IBM SFF systems have heat pipe coolers that used the system fan and had a temp diode at the exit of the cooler to control the system fan speed. Sadly they use very proprietary mounts and hold downs. I like the OEM 115x coolers that mount down with screws to a backplate that's part of the socket. Some HP systems used a non standard cooler spacing on 115x boards that screwed down the case itself under the board! No way to mount a cooler on those outside of the case really. I wonder what OEM's are doing now?

its the best wraith spire rgb comes with r7 1700, after testing thermals (actually used for 2 days before making the mount for a 212 cooler) now back to its own box

I commonly put them in the freezer and use them as a cold compress for injuries.
