X470 was a dud, upgrade to X570? (w/ 3700X)

Hey LinusTechTips,
So recently I had been building a PC and got ALL the parts together only to find that the motherboard I had bought would not detect the RAM I put in it, in any configuration. Wasn't too big a surprise, because I tried to save a few bucks and get it open box on Amazon. I won't do that again.

So now I've started to send it back and I'm faced with the question of getting the same motherboard, or buying a different one.

I had originally bought an ASUS X470-F Rog Strix. I have a Ryzen 7 3700X for the processor, so I COULD upgrade to x570 but I am limited on my budget. I have $200 available for a motherboard.

So my question is what is the better idea here? I hear I can get all the processing power out of my 3700X with an X470 just fine, and I dont have anything for PCIE 4.0 necessarily, my full build so far is as follows:

The X470-F is still a very good board, just order a bootkit from amd if it hasn't been updated yet.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

If out of the box compatibility with 3rd gen or BIOS flashback isnt necessary, you could just get an MSI X470 Carbon, Asrock Taichi or another Asus Strix F... X470 with BIOS flashback costs above $200 so it's cheapo X570 if not flashback-less X470 boards, say the Asus TUF board or Gigabyte Elite.

CPU: i7-2600K 4751MHz 1.44V (software) --> 1.47V at the back of the socket Motherboard: Asrock Z77 Extreme4 (BCLK: 103.3MHz) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 RAM: Adata XPG 2x8GB DDR3 (XMP: 2133MHz 10-11-11-30 CR2, custom: 2203MHz 10-11-10-26 CR1 tRFC:230 tREFI:14000) GPU: Asus GTX 1070 Dual (Super Jetstream vbios, +70(2025-2088MHz)/+400(8.8Gbps)) SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (main boot drive), Transcend SSD370 128GB PSU: Seasonic X-660 80+ Gold Case: Antec P110 Silent, 5 intakes 1 exhaust Monitor: AOC G2460PF 1080p 144Hz (150Hz max w/ DP, 121Hz max w/ HDMI) TN panel Keyboard: Logitech G610 Orion (Cherry MX Blue) with SteelSeries Apex M260 keycaps Mouse: BenQ Zowie FK1

Nice, replies from konosuba best girl and the only clothing store I can afford to shop at.

I appreciate both of your input! Thats probably all I need to just buy the X470-F again as I've bought some fans specifically for its Aura sync, and I quite liked its IO shield. Unless theres some reason I might consider a different X470? Upgrading is no issue, I have a spare 2700X available to do it.

Oh, and you should have purchased your RAM as a 32 Gb kit, not two kits of 16Gb to avoid the problem that you are having. That's why it cost a little bit more.

You need to reply to people's posts or tag them using @ if you want them to be notified of you posting otherwise they won't hear anything even if you mention them.

So what do YOU think about my choice of Mobo? You think MSI or ASUS is the way to go for an X470?

I appreciate the link, so you think based on this MSI is the way to go then?

Between the ASUS and MSI, do you have a preference?

You do understand that no X470 board will work with Ryzen 3000 unless the BIOS have been updated? If the BIOS have not been updated you need a Ryzen 2000 (maybe 1000) chip to install to update the BIOS first or a MB that has a BIOS Flashback feature that lets you update the BIOS without a chip in the socket.

Right, like I said before I have a spare 2700X for this.

Any chance you have a preference between boards though?

I'm really just looking for a "I prefer this brand because x y z" kinda thing if anyone here has an opinion

Working between multiple threads, I forgot about your spare 2600X.That Strix is supposed to have a high quality VRM, however, since you had trouble with it, maybe you should try something different.

So do you have a use for that cpu ? as going from a 2700X to a 3700X is a waste.

Not sure what the hangup on the processor here is, I have one available to me for this specific process and I am looking for opinions on X470s
Please go somewhere else with this.

What about the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite which barely fits into your price range?

I was looking at these. And its definitely something I could nab. I guess my biggest apprehension was what peoples opinions on the quality of these motherboards are. I'll def take this one into consideration too

If you decided to read up to the point of me asking for people to get back on topic, ask an off topic question and get your feelings hurt that is on you.

No you said you had a 'Spare' R7 2700X but wanted a 3700X. Maybe I was trying to save you money for a pointless upgrade but you know best.

I said I have everything covered and was looking for opinions on X470s, so yeah I guess in that regard I know best. Did you have any opinions on the relevant topic at hand though?

Because I own the 3700X already, and the 2700X is a loaner for this specific purpose, as this is the fourth time I'm stating

it costs more than the other two? Also Asus's track record on AM4 in reliable BIOS releases isn't that good (recent BIOS update broke mouse control, in the past they broke PBO and worsened overclocking during updates). Aura seems to be somewhat buggy and need specific steps during the installation.

Not really. Imo I can pick faults from all brands, just the matter of how many I can pick out from a certain generation of products.

Since you said you were "upgrading" do you already have a mobo? If so and it's b450 or x470 you could just stick with it. Otherwise maybe the b450 tomahawk. Also maybe switch from the samsung m.2 to something cheaper and use it to buy a better gpu than the 1660ti.
