How Much Should I Pay For A Crt Monitor?

I'm looking at 19" crt monitors on ebay and wondering if the prices are to high.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-17-Dell-VGA-Retro-Gaming-CRT-Computer-Monitor-8D466-P992/153499876896?hash=item23bd4e3e20:g:KLoAAOSwwf1c5tv9

Should I go for it? There is a scuff mark on the screen, can it be fixed?

A CRT monitor? Nothing, you can likely get one for free if you visit some electronic recycling center.
You honestly shouldn't be buying one at all, they are bad for your eyes, not as sharp as an LCD monitor and extremely bulky.

You can get a much better LCD monitor for that price today.

What is your reason for wanting a CRT monitor anyway?

The only reason to use a CRT is if for some reason you have some old PC or something that NEEDS to be used and only works with a CRT.

Just buy a proper, modern monitor.

If it's to play older games/consoles and you feel like the input lag with modern monitors/TVs to be bad, maybe just get a Framemeister instead?

Those ebay units are marked up partially because they put the word 'gaming' in the title but also because those things are pretty heavy and cost a bunch to ship.

I'd recommend checking out a local listing site like craigslist, letgo, or facebook marketplace and seeing what's available in the $0-20 range unless you want a widescreen CRT which are a bit rarer.

Yea I thought pricing ebay was kinda high, I'm looking for a 19" flat screen crt monitor, I just have a hard time finding them at normal prices.

The fighting game community still loves CRTs. 0 latency is great when everybody needs frame-perfect inputs.

Go for Trinitron screens, they're amazing. I've got a pair in my basement I'll never let go of because the images are amazing on them.

That being said, buy locally! Shipping is ABSURD for a monitor that weighs like 50lbs PLUS there's a big chance it'll be damaged during shipping. Trinitron screens (IBM, Dell, actual Sony, etc) have some awesome reset controls to 'refresh' the image quality if it's drifted due to age and rough handling but they can't fix broken. Most issues are resolved with a degauss, color return, and adjusting the geometry manually. They have very little ghosting or bleed between white and black, almost no trails on the screen, the colors look vibrant and accurate, and they double as room heaters in the winter with each screen consuming about 250W of power!

I had a lot of fans blowing around that apartment. Also being that the screens weigh 50lbs each you need a pretty strong desk to hold it all!

I have an IBM P96 and a functionally identical Dell model as well. I remember playing Doom3 and a bunch of other games on them, I'm sure the lack of input lag has a lot to do with why I'm so bad at those games now. Yeah, it's the input lag for sure...

I will have to keep my eye out for a good one, I am willing to drive up to 50 miles for a flat screen CRT monitor in decent condition and with decent specs. I Just will not PAY the CRAZY prices on Ebay and have it broken during shipping.

I don't even know what you're trying to refer to but flat screens have been a thing since the 90's with CRT's commercially and even before that in professional monitors. I bought a flat screen 27" CRT TV for $120 like 15 years ago. Flat screen doesn't mean anything other than exactly what it says, the screen itself is flat.

Most people, except those in the know think of flat screens as what we know today as thin LCD monitors etc.

As you mentioned, the original flat screens were CRTs.

Also ultra scan was the Shiz! I had a beautiful Dell CRT that was used to play counterstrike!
