I never realized how crap 4790k was until now.

I honestly thought 4790k was still a pretty good chip for gaming.

How I was so wrong.

Most games gpu limited anyway.

But after putting in my 3800x

 

But after loading star citizen my fps doubles. 

From 50fps too 100fps ( my monitors limit).

FF15 no low spikes now and +20 fps.

 

This really blows my mind.

 

And no low spikes in any games anymore.

Yeah the 4 core CPUs are really starting to suffer in min FPS, going forward 6 core will be minimum for smooth gaming.

I ebay’d mine like 6 months ago when I side graded to a 2600x. Resell value was too high to not make a move. (And who wants such an old ass mobo anyway) Lucked out.

 

What a great processor that had a great launch price. Bought mine from a microcenter maybe like 5 or 6 months before the 6700k came out for 279 bucks plus 30 dollar mobo discount. 

 

If I remember correctly it traded blows with the 6700k during the 6700k launch window.

Sold mine two years ago and got a Ryzen 1700, never looked back. The 4790k was blistering fast at 4.8ghz, but goddamn did it run hot. Sold the chip for $300, the Maximus VII Formula for $220, and 16gb Corsair memory for $80. My Ryzen upgrade cost less than what I sold all my used shit for! (Got a cheaper mobo this time tho. that VII Formula was a nightmare)

Nice. I thought about doing that deal. But everyone said it wasn't an upgrade. So I didnt.

My 1700 overclocked to 4ghz has about the same IPC as a stock 4790k. My overclocked 4790k would be a decent bit faster in that regard. Generally in games IPC is important but I never noticed a dip in performance, and games like BF5 excel on chips with more cores. In terms of multithreaded performance the 1700 mops the floor with the 4790k. No comparison.

WTH would you run a $1300 2080 Ti with a 5 years old cpu?  Of course something more modern is going to have better results.  You could have saved a few last year and put the money towards a 2080, 2700x and decent mb last year and had similar results.

Wish I didn’t buy one but I loved the boards I got for it. Kinda feeling the same way with my 8700k though. No head room for a better card now. Hope new games will run better.
