Does the Ryzen 3 3200G need the X570 chipset?

Hello, everyone!

 

One of my friends is making his first PC, consisting in an Ryzen 3 3200G paired with an Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB.

But, he plans to use the ASRock B450M Steel Legend mobo, which... is not X570...? (To put it bluntly.)

 

The new APUs are Zen+ CPUs, but they are from the new series.

 

So, does he need to update the BIOS on the mobo to use it?

They could use B350, B450, x370, x470, x570 and not that they should, but they can also use A320 (if supported by manufacturer)

 

They'll just need to do a bios update, like you said

Prices here in Romania are nothing short but crazy, the difference in the R3 and R5 CPUs is big, at least in our currency.
Also, he wont build his PC right now, so deals wont help.

If you're already getting a dedicated GPU, it makes no sense waste money on an APU you won't utilize, like stated above a Ryzen 5 1600 would offer you more as a stand alone CPU.

The B450M pro4 is cheaper and better than the steel legend, it has more power phases.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

No, these chips should work with motherboards using chipsets B350 and B450 and anything higher than that... double check the motherboard page on manufacturer website to see if there's a BIOS update adding support for that CPU model.

Also, it's not a good idea to buy a CPU with integrated graphics if you're gonna have a dedicated graphics card anyway.

The processors with integrated graphics have only pci-e 3.0 x8 connection to the video card, instead of a full pci-e 3.0 x16 connection and this means the video card will be a very tiny bit slower with such a CPU, usually under 1-2% of performance loss.

But, the prices are so good for processors like Ryzen 1600 or even 1700 that it's silly to go for a processor with integrated graphics today... even 2600 may be cheap enough.

Ryzen 1600 is cheaper than 2400g right now, and almost as cheap as the 2200g.

It's on discount at PC Garage for 560 RON : https://www.pcgarage.ro/procesoare/amd/ryzen-5-1600-32ghz-box/

The 2200g is 500 RON... really worth the 50 RON difference.

 

Also, you can buy processors from Amazon.co.uk - they're shipped from EU warehouse so you don't pay customs taxes and shipping is cheap, around 20-30 RON.

Also note that the 108 UK pounds includes the 20% or 21% UK VAT, when you checkout the price will be recalculated to use Romania 19% VAT so it will be even cheaper.

I don't know what prices you have there but here the R5 1600 is only 10€ more expensive than the R3 3200G

As for motherboards, a model with decent VRM and still cheap is MSI B450-A Pro : https://www.pcgarage.ro/placi-de-baza/msi/b450-a-pro/

The VRM is decent enough to handle even an overclocked 12 core 3900x.

 

GIGABYTE AORUS B450M would also work just fine, but it's a tiny bit weaker in the VRM department compared to the MSI model : https://www.pcgarage.ro/placi-de-baza/gigabyte/aorus-b450-m/ - it wouldn't matter unless into heavy overclocking of 8 core or higher Ryzen processors

 

You can look up this document - if you want as high compatibility with the 3rd generation Ryzens, you want a motherboard that has at least TWO green checks and an orange (orange means it's possible, but highly recommended to have some additional cooling around the cpu area).

Dude, the 1600 is cheap in Romania, do some better searching around:

 

550 RON = ~ 116 euro

I'm genuinely quite skeptical about wether it would be worth it using ryzen 1st gen in 2019... Idk
